Chain failed today at 120
Just I'd share tonight s experience on the m40 near London uk, just got in after chain failed tonight on way home.
Accelerating hard over 110 in 4th. Big bang red light over rev shows.
No drive, coasted across 4lanes to hard shoulder.
Got off had a look, chain guard front and rear smashed, swing arm and 2 suspension yellow rings deep gashed, one indicator gone, plug in module gone, rear passenger mount not triangular anymore has small bend in it.
12000 miles chain always pretty much oiled and adjusted.
Guess was a lucky about not being going round a bend and bein on a motorway in a dry light traffic situation. Bike didn't even skirt or anything just a big bang and overrev for a second or so until I grabbed the clutch.
Any ideas why chain could have failed? motorway patrol found it and on inspection the side links seem to have sheared ?
Pics tomorrow. Damage seems cosmetic but not going back in the garage for 24 hrs.
Bugs.

A 530 chain will last a heck of a lot longer than 12,000 miles though! I keep mine clean and lubed, but I'm not meticulous about it. Still, my original chain is at 18,600 miles now and still going strong. It has also seen more than its fair share of 100+ mph stints too.

My chain was completely worn at 25000 km / 15600 miles. Rear sprocket looked ok, but front sprocket was like a sharkfin.

Why would Ducati handle this? Chains are like tires and brakes normal wear and tear.... are they in our back pockets adjusting and careing for these chains? its out of their hands, they have no control over how these items are treated.... i have seen chains and sprockets go at 8000 miles and have seen them go to 25000. it really is how they are kept clean and lubed and adjusted.....
just because it's lubed doesnt mean its going to last forever.
