small crack in fuel tank

I have a 2010 Multi with 5000 miles on it. I was cleaning it today and noticed a small hairline crack in the fuel tank on the left side by the plastic panel that covers the bottom of the tank. Wondering if anyone else has run into this problem?

Are you not aware of the Ducati plastic fuel tank problems yet? Not saying the crack is from an expanded fuel tank, but perhaps you might do a search of this site and get informed about the plastic fuel tank deformation issue on many Ducati models, MTS1200 included. I hope it's not leaking and if it is, that you'll drain it asap.

Are you talking about a crack in the actual tank, or one of the body panels covering the tank? Knowing how the tank is installed (I've taken mine off several times installing various farkles), I have no idea how the tank itself could crack from expansion on our bikes. It's only bolted to the bike at 2 places up by the head. The other 2 mounting points are friction fits against large rubber bushings.....

Noel, you're most likely referring to one of the tank panel/fairing pieces and not the actual fuel tank (behind the plastics). If so, it could be cracked due to a myriad of reasons, one being the one Stryder mentioned above.

Post up a photo if possible.

See ya,

He may also be talking about the irritating gap that many have developed between the tank and upper body panel, as opposed to a crack in the plastic piece itself. Yes, pics would definitely help.

If you are talking about the plastic tank cover, mine cracked too. My tank and plastic cover were both replaced by my dealer at no cost to me.

well, i am not sure if it is a cover, unless the whole tank is covered. That being the case then it is a crack in the cover piece. I never noticed it until giving the bike a cleaning, due to the weather it has not been ridden since November. I am rather anal about keeping the bike in clean condition so the crack just appeared in the last 2 months. I will have to check as to whether it is a cover or the actual tank.

the tank is covered by plastic fairing bits. one of those bits is likely cracked as opposed to the actual fuel tank.

bugger,

bugger,
I think you hit the nail squarely....especially since his bike has been sitting for > 2 months, with the evil ethanol doing it's worst.
