Base vs. S
Anyone with a base model wishing they had gone for the S or the touring?
I'm looking at a 10' base non ABS for 10K w/2500 miles on it. I'd need to buy luggage for this so the price would probably be another 750-1200 more.
or a 10' touring with similar mileage for 15k. (bags obviously included)
The electronics both intrigue and scare me. This bike would be daily transportation, in rain/snow/sun, and needs to be rock solid. I could always get a used FZ1 for less, but the multi is a hell of a machine.

I have a S Sport model. I wish I had gotten a standard with ABS and done a cartridge kit for the front forks and a ttx for the rear. The S with the electronic suspension is, meh at best.

+1 on the cartridge kit for the front and the ttx for the rear. I think all ducatis can without ohlins need these handling upgrades.

I have a 2010 MTS1200S, it came with panniers and I have a trunk on order now. This is the first Duc I've had with Ohlins suspension and I have to say, it's fantastic. It's like Showa suspension with a velvet glove on! I didn't think the DES was a big deal, but after buying the S, it's so sweet, going from single rider, to single with luggage, to a passenger with luggage, all at a push of a button. I actually was going to buy a base and the deal fell through. I ended up with a used S model and have NO regrets!

I've had several BMW GS bikes. The first thing you do is install the Ohlins shocks front and rear to make it a complete bike. I purchased The S Touring and haven't had an issue with the S components of the bike. It's a truly amazing bike. If something were to happen to the bike, I would replace it with an identical replacement. I also have a Hyper S and am in the process of upgrading the front forks to Ohlins inserts. Someone said the Ohlins suspension on the S Multi is like having velvet suspension and adjustability at the click of a button. Well said.

I have had a 2010 Base non ABS model since June 2010 & covered 6,000 miles so far. There's were some issues with the ABS early on which were resolved with an update so I was initially glad I didn't go for that option but guess I would regret it if at some stage in the future I had a lock up & fall!
The reason I didn't go for an S other than cost was because I was uncertain of the reliability of the suspension but to be fair to Ducati there have been very few recorded issues. In my opinion an S would really comes in to it's own if you do a lot of touring 2 up with luggage etc.
I have also got the Givi rack & Kappa K33 pannier combination for occasional use.
I nearly swapped mine for a new Multi just before Chrismas & was going to go for the exact same model so i guess that sums it up.

Love my base model, no ABS and no DES = lighter bike and less to foul up. After riding a 2007 1100s for four years and not making a single change to my suspension settings once my bike was set up for me is why I didn't go with a S model the second time around. i spent the saved money on all my extras.

I love my base non abs as well. You still get traction control, and the four modes are still there; it just adjusts power output, traction control level and throttle response.
Get the base if you can, then spend money on luggage, gear etc.
