Hey Guys, I don't know if there are any illumination engineer/brainiacs out there, but I have a question. I have a 2007 MTS and the lowbeam has always been poor. I purchased an HID headlight from Cyclegear and installed it hoping the night vision would be better. Disappointed, it was worse! I did some googling and found that the focus on the projector beam was probably off with the HID bulb. I disassembled the unit and experimented with the focus. It was very limited change available without destroying the unit. I did find that if I removed the 1/4 inch gasket from the back of the unit where the bulb physically attaches that the beam was brighter. (bulb closer to the lens) I also experimented with a flashlight and found that the closer I held it to the projector lens the brighter/more focused the beam became. Here is the question:
Has anyone any background/experience with projector beams? Is there any company that modifies these things? I see great potential for a very bright light if this were engineered correctly. BTW, I put the stock halogen back in and with the 1/4 inch adjustment I had made the beam is definitely brighter!
Before you convert your headlight, there may be some things to look at.
Converting a halogen reflector to use a HID bulb is illegal.. Ducati and bosch have engineers that try to give the motorcycle as much light on the road as possible, while keeping inside the legal lines.
BUT, what you CAN do is install a good quality bulb. That WILL make a diffrence.
I use Philips VisionPlus or Phillips Nightbreaker. Osram SilverStar is also a good bulb. Avoid PIAA and "extra blue" and such bulbs at all costs. The decrease lightoutput. http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/product...of_winter.html
If you want more power on your highbeam, then adding extra auxillary lights is the way to go.

This company makes retrofit units for cars and I believe bikes too, just a matter of finding the right size that will fit inside your light.
You can also find them on Ebay, cheap enough since you're just looking for a simple low beam projector as opposed to a low and hi beam with a shutter (Lexus type) kind of unit.
Keep us update if you go for it.
I must also suggest as Amullo did already the Silverstar bulbs, many people swear by them, I havn't tried them on the bike yet but I just got a set for my truck.
Cheers!
Thanks for the replies guys. My high beam is plenty bright enough, and oddly enough it is a regular reflector type beam. The bulb for the low beam is an H9 and as of the present time there are no "silverstar" or equivalent brighter bulbs available?! I have ordered an HID bulb from DDM tuning, I will update when it's in place. As far as Ducati/Bosch engineers go, I think there is a gap between design and application, usually having to do with budgeting.
Just pop in a good set of HIDs in there and you'll be fine. Modifying anything on your bike is technically illegal. Yes, even changing out your tail tidy or handguards. Making your bike safer by making yourself visible is one illegal mod I'd do any day. Here is mine with the HIDs. They are 55W. Yes there is a lot of light dispersion since its not in a projector housing but they brighten the road ten times better than the stockers. No they will not cause excessive heat. This video was made to show the difference between the DDM tuning ballast and the Chinese eBay brand with the same bulbs in there. Go with DDM although their customer care is horrendous and technically their ballasts are also made in China.
I agree, make yourself as visible as possible irrespective of certain silly laws. I've had DDM HIDS on two other bikes and had great luck with them, just make sure you mount the ballasts so they don't move around...

Hey Guys,
Those of you who have dealt with DDM tuning. Turkishexpress has recounted their horrible customer service record. But, how about turn around time upon ordering? I ordered the HIDs from them on 1/15/2012 and according to the shipping # they gave me the shipper, as of today has not even received the package.

That's part of their issue. You're lucky if they gave you a shipping/tracking number. It takes a while to deliver. You sometimes have to contact them a million times and before you even get to speak to them it will just show up at your door at their will...
