The Thermostat sits on the end of the engine and regulates the coolant flow from the engine to the radiator. It its normal state it is CLOSED and it keeps the coolant within the engine. This allows the engine to get up to running temp and helps with emissions and mileage. Once the coolant within the engine rises to running temp/thermostat temp, the thermostat will open and allow the hot coolant out of the engine and start the circulation loop to and from the front radiator.
During hot and cool driving the thermostat will open and close as you drive to regulate the engine coolant temperature. Thermostats are made to open at "SET temperatures." The O.E. thermostat of the 4XE1-T engine is 180F/82C !!
Thermostats usually last about 60-70,000 miles. They usually fail in the closed position which traps the coolant within the engine with no way to circulate to the radiator. This leads to overheating and can result in problems such as blown gaskets or worse! If the thermostat fails in an open position (very rare), it will cause the coolant loop to be permanently open which will cause the engine to take forever to warm up and run at a very low operating temperatures.
I have read the old post but they do not seem right If the thermostat is like cars and truck it really should keep a set tempperature .

Have noticed the same condition: seems 149 -150 degrees is the normal temp unless I am running it really hard and then I have seen the engine temp rise up into the 174 -180 degree range.
Took delivery this past October from Moto Corsa in Portland so I have not run the the Multistrada in warm temperatures. Maybe some of your warm climate dwellers could comment on what is normal.
Just for comparison, my Aprilia warms right up to 174 - 178 degrees and pretty much stays there regardless of the outside temperature.

Now that it has cooled down, mine is running in the 150F range which seems to be the common theme developing in this thread. I don't see it as an issue because there are no performance or gas mileage issues and it holds a steady temp.

After a ride i let it idle ,itsould get hotter after a few minutes and the fans should start at about 200° to 210°
I believe that should show you the thermo is opening....
In the cold I let it get up to the 212° temp and I feel that should get the water out of the oil and you should not get the white in the oil sight glass
A 5-10 minute idle after a ride should get you up to the hotter temp...

Idling mine will get hotter, but while moving it hangs around 150 deg F. I think my VTR was the same.
