Dumb question - rear tire removal
For those that have done it: Do you *really* need to remove the exhaust to pull the rear tire? Can you just loosen it? Or wiggle the rear tire by it without loosening/removal? Any issues fitting it back on?
I was looking at it the other day hoping to do a 'quick' rear tire change at the local shop by bringing my wheel down to them, and 'quick' didn't appear possible after reading the manual and seeing the exhaust removal instructions..
Thanks in advance!

you either have a bad manual or are reading the wrong pages.
You don't need to remove the exhaust to remove the rear wheel.

You do have to pull the exhaust. It is easy first remove the top silver shield to gain easy access to the bolt that will loosen the exhaust, but first remove the three screws from the heat shield and remove this first. Also when you refit exhaust don't tighten the main bolt just yet, leave it a little loose so you can easily re-align the heat shield holes, these can be a bitch if you go crank the main bolt down with out making sure the three holes are aligned. Also when you loosen the big bolt up you have to twist the exhaust forward so that the hook under neath will disengage. It's all pretty easy just take your time.

i also didn't see anything about how to remove the exhaust - found that there's a pin on the pipe, and a slot in the exhaust. loosen the clamp screw, rotate the exhaust and it slides right off w/o removing the heat shield. Next comes the battle getting the axle nut off - long lever needed. Now if i can find someone to mount my new tire ! good luck

Easy way...
Remove the shield (4 torx screws)
Loosen main clamp screw where the slip on connects to cat.
Remove slip on by rocking it towards and away from you if you're facing the right side of the bike. Sometimes a rubber hammer helps a little.

Incorrect on both counts. I should have specified: this is for a 2011 ducati mulitstrada 1200 S, which has the exhaust muffler partially covering the rear wheel on the right (removal) side. The manual used is the ducati service manual, and specifies removing the muffler as a pre-requisite task to remove the rear wheel from the motorcycle.
@ the rest - thanks for confirming, I thought I might be able to skate by removing it, but guess not.

Mine came off without doing anything to the muffler. It was a squeeze though. I recall getting mad at it.
