Cheese with my "Whine"
I am trying to diagnose a problem with my new to me 2010 Multi Sport. I haven't even had a chance to ride it yet. After the regular ignition noises, a high pitched whine continues from the TPS area. Conveniently, it didn't make such a noise when I picked it up a few weeks ago. Unplugging the large connector on the left side visible through the trellis stops the noise and throws a TPS code. The whine is controlled in both pitch and volume by moving the throttle. Unfortunately, I am a ferry ride away from my dealer and they suggest that it may be a noise inherent in the ride by wire. It is just too loud and unusual to be normal. Obviously they need to see the bike for an accurate diagnosis but I was wondering if anyone here had any ideas. Multis are pretty rare in my area so I don't have another to compare it to. Thanks for your input.

I'm just across the pond in Tsawwassen if you want to compare bikes.
ps I don't hear the same thing on mine. The only "high pitched" noise I hear is the fuel pump bringing the system up to pressure before starting the engine.

Thanks for the offer! I get the normal pump sound but this one sounds similar to a stuck relay. Just not right. My only worry about picking up a bike in Vancouver was going back for service and it sure doesn't appear I will have to wait too long.

The high pitch whine is normal. It is the throttle servo motor. There was a long discussion on it when the bike first came out. Search.

I've always assumed the whine was from the cam belts. My two previous Ducs have made this noise. So did my old ST1100.

Thanks Mr. Sunshine. FWIW I do try to do a complete search prior to posting and used TPS, Whine, etc but didn't see anything. I will try again. It is interesting however that I did not have this sound when I first viewed and picked up the bike, only since last week. It is quite loud and maybe/hopefully one of those mysterious sounds that goes away with time. The bike has only 3500 KMs so wasn't ridden much. I have been around alot of bikes and if I was standing beside this one with no knowledge of the bike I would definitely be saying " something is wrong there" Thanks for the replies.

Actually, Ian, I have followed this site for years and I have not heard of this complaint before so you may not find any earlier threads.

Hi bcmonster,
Got my MTS today and had to replace the battery (2nd hand bike). After a short ride, had to change DTS settings at which point I noticed 'the whine'. Definitely not normal! I haven't checked to see if it changes with throttle, will do so tomorrow. Noise is coming from right hand side of the bike (btw what is the TPS?). Hope there is an easy fix... Could have sworn it wasn't there before I changed the battery (which wasn't completely flat, but couldn't swing the starter).
Ok, had some time to make a clip:
- you'll hear the sound going away when I press on the bracket. It's almost like something is preventing it from being completely closed?!
