Termi exhaust - sick puppy
I was trying to figure out why my 1198 sounds like King Kong and my multi sounds like a puppy. Both have Termis so I took a few rough measurements.
Headpipe ID------Multi 2.10" (53.3 mm) 3.46 sq. inch
1198 2.155" (54.7 mm)
Collector ID------Multi 2.460" (62.5 mm) 4.75 sq. inch
1198 2.155" (54.7 mm)
Muffler ID--------Multi 1.70" (43.2 mm) 2.27 sq. inch
1198 2.01" (51 mm)
Muffler Length----Multi 19" (483 mm)
1198 13" (330 mm)
It appears as though this may require surgery on the muffler. It needs to be opened up and shortened. Has anyone already done this?

I had my Termi cut by my local muffler shop. It's a straight forward job. If you want to do it yourself, here's a link with instructions. http://www.motorcycleinfo.co.uk/inde...pageId=1589737

It's not that much louder than the original length. I like the look more than anything else. It does get a bit more hot so don't stick the Termi sticker too high up. Upper portion of thermal Termi sticker melted because of the heat. I ended up sticking a smaller one lower and had not had any problems melting.

Somewhat related question: Anyone have a source for an "arm" to hold the Termi can on if you take off the passenger footpegs? That footpeg bracket is always in the way of my heel and my bags are off 90% of the time so this would be an easier and cheaper solution than buying another Termi footpeg bracket and chopping it up. TIA...

The reason your 1198 and your Multi sound so different has little or nothing to do with the muffler.
The issue is valve overlap. The Multi has 11 degrees of overlap (hence the "Testastretta 11 degree" on the sidecase), while the 1198 has 41 degrees of overlap.
Short of putting the cams out of an 1198 in your Multi (and I have no idea if that's even possible), you're not going to get that trademark Ducati 'thump' you feel in the center of your chest out of the Multi. Which is a shame, because that's the best noise in motorcycling as far as I'm concerned.

+1
My 2 cents,
I have a 999R with 57mm full race termi and ECU. It sounds like a slutty, mean, angry pro dragster staged up fixin to set somebody's doors for em. (sorry, that bike brings out the worst in me)
Multi S with the full Termi etc... Sounds like an exotic trail bike on steroids and blow.
Totally different due to valve actuation/timing. IMHO.

I agree, but when you're raised on this................................

the puppy dog bark doesn't cut it. I think this termi was designed for a different demographic than me. The termi on the Diavel sounds a lot meaner, probably because they are very short. I have to give it a try, it's in my blood. Thanks guys for the input.

I am in the process of building a full Titanium system for my Multi… I found is the Diavel uses larger head pipes (58mm if I remember correctly) and also has equal length pipes as well. I did increase my head pipe size for the Multi to match the Diavel and am still struggling to fit equal length pipes under it. The can is going to take a lot of experimenting to get the correct volume and fit it where I want it. I think the larger head pipes and volume of the muffler will change the Tone of the multi significantly, but I think the others are correct about the cam timing making a difference in the sound/feel of a multi, especially at idle. Possibly some advance of the stock cams might change it’s attitude??? Now, if only somebody knew if 1198 cams would swap. Maybe one day I’ll have time to head down that road….I hope very soon to have the bike running on the new exhaust…I pick up the new argon bottle today!
