Painting exhaust?

Just picked up a 2010 Multi Sport and said goodbye to my Monster 1100! Already started with some minor mods and have painted the bottom plates and thought about painting the Cat part of the exhaust. The high temp paint I used is a pretty good match for the frame so I thought the exhaust might "disappear" a bit visually if it was painted. Anyone tried this? I haven't been able to leave a stock exhaust on my other bikes but actually like the look of the stock Multi exhaust.

I installed the LV midpipe to get rid of the cat. Its weight and the amount of heat it produced were the issues for me. Like you I like the look of the MTS exhaust however so I ceramic coated the covers and used it as is. It'll cost you $30-40 to ceramic coat the aluminum exhaust covers

I have been looking at the various Cat deletes and may do something in the future. I probably won't insure the bike until the spring so I am looking for things to burn up some time while I wait.

Turk;

I can't tell from your picture. Did you ceramic the cat also?

Thanx.

No he removed the cat and that may be my plan down the line, but for now I think I am going to paint it. I have some 500 degree paint that is a pretty good match for the frame paint that may make the cat look a little less ugly. Should I go to a higher temp paint?? Not sure what temp the cat would get to.

No but I ceramic coated the mid pipe. Although ceramic coating the cat would make sense since the coating keeps the temps down quiet a bit. I was able to see a 200F difference between the non coated section of the pipe vs. coated. This difference may even be greater if the cat was coated since it is the hottest part of the exhaust usually. Just to give you an idea, I can put my whole hand on the exhaust after a long ride after only a couple of minutes.

I have used VHT Cast Iron Hi Temp Manifold spray paint on exhaust sytems and headers for years...It is hands down the only paint I have never had NOT burn off headers...I do not have any here to compare, but I'll bet the color match is pretty close to the frame. A can of paint is pretty cheap to test. Food for thought.

Yep, blacked out the CAT box with VHT Exhaust paint and it has stayed on for 3 months now with-out any problem. The only issue is it only comes in matt colors and I was looking for satin black.

I went with a higher temp paint but it is also matte black finish. At least now the cat doesn't stand out.
