ADV Tradecraft, your set up, kit, and why?

Hi all, I live in a part of the country where the GS and GSA are almost an oxymoron. I am interested in learning more about how you set up your MTS kit and why?

I'm sorry, but that statement makes absolutely no sense to me. Could you state it in a different way?

I took the comment as stating that the GS and GSA are over-weight to be considered true dual-sport capable machines.... Hence the reason he is asking how a Multi would be set-up for off-road endeavors.

I know mine is older but here she is... Somewhat ready.

Crash bars, high front fender and durable luggage. Oh yeah and some nice dual sport tires like the D616's.

Without baiting, GS means, Gelande Sport, which literally translates into Off-Road Sport, but is common to see many GS's never see off-road(1). Thank you for the question. It does read out of balance and curt. Many GS buyers here where I live don't ride GS bikes off-road, somewhat the same as the MTS. However, there is much in the way information available for them if they choose to go adventure, wherein my question starts. Is there any MTS off-road knowledge to impart. With diligence, there is little available in caparison to the GS, however there must an adventure rider comfortable with the MTS. I am resolved this a great on-road bike with some limited off-road capability, but maybe someone dispels this rationalization. Maybe their here. Let's say we start over and not offend--I am interested in learning more about how you set up your MTS kit and why? Thank you, again.

I read a nice write up about the tire and a comparisson to the sync's. @ .: Dunlop D616 Vs. Pirelli Scorpion Sync | Review | Canyon Chasers Motorcycle Sport Touring :.

Have you been in trail much with the bike? Did you have to walk the bike much? Thank you.

Adventure riding for me implies rough road and challenges with the expectation that the bike will go down sometime and be capable of handling this. Soft luggage, crash bars, barkbusters and bash plates are installed along with a foam air filter that can be cleaned and oiled regularly.

With that in mind I keep a KTM 990 for just this type of riding which surpasses the GSA capabilities (provided we don't talk about fuel capacity/consumption) A bike that tries to be everything ends up being a compromise. With a life full of compromises, why do it with something I really enjoy.

The MTS is most enjoyable in a milder riding sense. "Horses for courses" so to speak.

Correct! I ride off-piste as much as I can, but there are significant limitations on the Multi. The 17" front wheel and the lack of knobbies produced in the correct size. Apart from that, remember that this is a street-bike, not a 250 two-stroke ready to tackle harsh terrain.

I have ridden trails with more sugar sand than a beach, and with the tires aired down I am able to power through it alright. I have ridden whoops sections similar to MX tracks where slower is better. I have also ridden gravel roads at 60-70 mph, and taken corners that have reminded me why MX'ers have knobs on the front.

My bike is not perfect, it has scratches, is dirty in places my hands can't reach but I love being able to ride in places where most don't believe I belong. Have I had to walk my bike through difficult parts? Yes. Have I gotten the rear tire stuck? Yes. Would I ride through those places again? Yes.

The Multi is much more capable than my Hyper.

Check out some of the pictures: Multi or KLR?

I probably just got caught up in trying to find the internally inconsistent part (the oxymoron) and became unable to figure out the question.

My setup will be of no help since the most off-road I'll likely ever see is the dirt road to my parents' house. I spend almost all my riding time on paved rural roads within 25 miles of my house.

I do know a guy at the Ducati dealer who rides off-road in the mountains of New Hampshire, but then he gets a discount on parts if he breaks it...
