New Ducati Monsters steering geometry and the classic Ducatis of yore.

I like the new air cooled 2v Monster 797. But I'm having second thoughts now. I might as well buy a modern Ducati SBK and put a handlebar on it. :)

I was curious on how the 797 chassis compared to the Scrambler, and I was surprised: Monsters' geometries are getting closer and closer to modern SBKs than to the classic Ducatis. Older Monsters weren't like that.

It's not just about playing with fork offset they're changing the rake and wheelbase now by a lot more than I thought.

What's their end game? What's the competition for these bikes? I take it that the slow, heavy steering and ponderous Boneville isn't a threat anymore. So is the Japanese the main competition for the Monsters? Here's some numbers:

Panigale 1199:

1437mm wheelbase
24.5
100mm (!!)

NEW 2017 Monster 1200S:
wheelbase:
1485 mm (58.46 in)
Rake
23,3° (WTF)
Front wheel trail
86.5 mm (3.41 in) (WTF 2)

2016 1200R:
Wheelbase
1509 mm (59.4 in)
Rake
24,3°
Trail
89 mm (3,5 in)

2017 Monster 797 air cooled:
Wheelbase
1,435 mm (56.50 in)
Rake
24°
Front wheel trail
90 mm (3.54 in)

2015-2017 Ducati Scrambler:
1445
24
112mm trail (WTF!!)

----- ***** -----
Some Classic Ducatis for comparison:

Ducati Supersport 900SS
Wheelbase:
1410mm
Rake:
25
Trail:
104mm (!!!)

Monster 900
1430
23
104mm

Ducati 916:
1430mm wheelbase
24-25 angle (adjustable)
94-100mm (adjustable)

The Scrambler is the one that gets closer to the classic Ducati numbers. The Monster are more like modern SBKs/Japanese bikes by comparison, no? Why?

The Monster has edged from "naked sporty bike" into the "naked superbike" race. Its direct competition is bikes more like the Aprilia V4 Tuono, KTM 1290 SuperDuke, MV Agusta Brutale, BMW S1000R, Yamaha FZ10, and Suzuki GSX-S 1000. It's actually *less* extreme than most of those.

I agree... the 797 (796) isn't anywhere near nekkid Superbike territory, which I consider 1000cc and higher, but the general idea is correct.

Interesting... the 797 has slightly shorter WB and less trail. Hopefully it handles as well as the 796, I don't know if I've ever ridden a more stable chassis.
