For Those with Termi's on their 696...
who were experiencing this surging issue/crossed coil wires etc..: did any of you find that putting termis on solved your problem and the bike ran smoother? After reading through a lot of posts, it seems desmo is the only one I can find (maybe among others) that states his bike doesn't behave as well as when it was stock. I have my 600 mile service next saturday and plan on installing termis and I too am experiencing this 3.5k-4k fluttering, which, BTW, doesn't bother me too much.I plan on asking the tech to check for potential crossed coil wires). So...will termis smooth out the ride or will I be trying out for the sequel for 8 seconds (luke perry is my hero...)
sr12roberts, I have been following your posts a little. Your last post re: this issue was you were getting the termis installed soon and you would update. how 'bout an update?

I had the termi's on since day one. I also had the crossed coil wires since day one. I never experienced surging nor fluttering, only over heating. After having the coil wires fixed the bike ran the same minus the overheating, which I always felt it ran beautifull.

I have an '07 695, and those had the surging/hiccuping issues as well due to strict emissions regs. I had the Termi slip-on kit installed with DP ECU and open airbox. Totally transformed the bike. No more fueling issues, sounds great and runs 40 degrees cooler.
It's a shame you have to spend all that money, but it's the only sure cure and is totally worth it.

I had the surging problems bad when I first got my 696. Also, it wouldn't start for anything in the morning, regardless of the 80 degree nights. I took it in for my 600 mile tune-up and had a termi kit installed at the same time and the difference is night and day. The bike still takes forever to warm up every time I start it, but it starts first try everytime now. I still get a lot of popping when the bike is cold, normally during downshifts. The dealer told me this was due to the humidity, but who knows if thats just their excuse. Other than that, the bike runs awesome with the termis.

I had my Termi kit installed at about 1000 miles.
Surging = Gone
Overheating = Bad, unless I leave my DB killers in (It never overheated before)
Does anyone know how to check for crossed coil wires? It seems like something that would be pretty easy to fix if it was just a simple plug and play.

Finally!!
Had my 600 mile service. Told the tech about the wires. He instantly knew and stated they are checking all 696's for crossed wires when they come in regardless of issues. That made me feel like they were doing their job. Also had the termis installed and the front sprocket change.
Results:
1. no more surging
2. no more overheating
3. More low end pull
the tech asked me if I wanted the db killers in or out. I said what the hell, take them out. well let me tell you. I felt like the engine was inside my brain. 50 mile ride home with no earplugs. Got home, took the helmet off, realized I was dizzy as hell and couldn't hear sh!t. Put the baffles back in right away. Rode it the next day, sounded stock. Pickle!! what do I do?? baffles in or out? It just sounded so tame with the baffles that I just couldn't in my right mind leave them in. SO I got earplugs. Now the ride is perfect. I won't have bleed from my ears anymore, but the people around me might. At least they'll know I'm coming.
timbuck, sorry but I don't know the answer to your question

Decibel killers out, ride wearing ear plugs is the way to do it.
Even if your bike was quiet, you really should wear earplugs as it has been shown that just the wind noise against your helmet will cause long term ear damage. So, since you should wear ear plugs anyway...

When I wrote about how loud the 696 w/ Termi's no one believed me. I have a 748S with Termi's and it sounds awesome...loud, throaty, but not crossing the threshold of pain as the 696. It was not the thump/thump that was loud, it was the sound towards the front of the engine. My bike still pops on deceleration. I need to hard-wire a battery tender to the battery and now I am totally convinced that the bike was designed by a screw happy Chimpanzee; the damn battery is under the gas tank. You need to unscrew the tens of screws to remove the panels, then drain the tank to reduce its weight then unscrew three bizarre fittings and gyrate the damn thing to lift it up. I had a 900CR and it had a clasp, you undo it and it lifts up. what the hell? It is not the first time that Ducati design a bike...I miss Tamburini.
On a side note, I am designing a sticker for Ducati to be placed on the frame in full view: In order to comply with emissions, this bike was designed to suck ass. If you have any intention of enjoying it, then remove the chip, cross the wires, replace the cans, and ride. By the way, our mechanics suck ass too! You probably know more about this bike than they do. Enjoy.

If you are referring to my experience at the dealer, you misunderstood me. I thought they were very professional and knowlegeable. They answered all my questions and knew exactly what was going on with my bike when I told them what was going on. I couldn't have been happier. I highly recommend this dealership to anyone in NorCal area
