696 Timing Belts - tensioning and replacement questions
I've heard more than once that the timing belts should be replaced every 2 years regardless of mileage. I bought my 09 696 brand new last year, so it still has a 2 year warranty (about 1 year+ remaining), and it was overdue for a timing belt (using the 2 year logic) September of 2010 (it was manufactured September 2008). It has a meager number of miles. So what is the truth on the timing belt replacement frequency? Is it every 2 years regardless of mileage, or should I consider replacing it every 15k miles?
Tensioning the belts is also interesting. The factory service guide says to use the DDS and measure the frequency after flicking the belt like a guitar string. I saw the mechanic at the dealer getting frustrated over the tool working on a Ducati at the shop. I saw YouTube videos and several DIY guides that say to slide a 6mm wrench across the belt under the tensioner rollers, if it slides through tight like a feeler gauge, it is supposed to be good to go. So which is it? do I use the allen wrench method, or do I figure out how to measure the frequency accurately?
Are there any other important items on the 696/Monster that I need to replace/check regularly regardless of mileage?
