1100's tank smaller than the 796's?

I just noticed that the 1100 has a 3.6 tank while the 796's is 3.8.

The difference is marginal but still it puzzles me: what's the thinking behind putting a smaller tank in a bike with a bigger engine?

I'm guessing this is doing nothing in favor of the 1100's range.

I'm hearing that the 1100 has around 45 mpg and while economy is not exactly a reason to consider the Monster 1100 ... still having a good mpg/gas tank size would give the bike a decent range.

I really don't feel like filling up my bike every day of the week ...

Does anyone have any real life numbers of what's the range of the 1100 or a 796 for comparison?

Thanks!

Is it possible that you are comparing models with abs vs. one without? I know the abs equipment sits under the tanks and reduces capacity slightly.

I get 40~50 miles per gallon on my 1100 (open filter, remap, and pipes). Usually the light comes on at 125~130 miles. I haven't gone over 25 miles with the reserve light on. I usually only get 2.8~3 gallons to go in after the light comes on.

i have an 09 1100 and the low fuel light comes on at about the 120 to 130 mile mark and takes anywhere from 2.9 gallons to 3.3 gallons. wish the range was better but its a monster not a multistrada and thats why i bought it

didn't know that ... that's probably the answer. For what I know the 796 doesn't have ABS.

Yeah, i know it's a monster not a multistrada but I confess that I don't really like that 130 miles range ... that's a big bummer for me.

Multistrada 1000/1100, 200 mile + range. Basically rides the same as a Monster 1100. Ugly but effective. Truly an underappreciated bike.

Alternatively, I have attached a 1 gallon jerry can to the passenger peg on longer trips by folding up a basket out of aluminum strap and bolting it to the peg mount. If you don't plan on a passenger. If you *do* plan on a passenger, even stronger vote for the MTS1100.

Maybe I am a wuss, but I am ready to pull over for gas by the time I've put on 130 miles. And if I rode exactly the speed limit and only accelerated gingerly, I'm sure I could manage better mileage.

The wife's m1100s with full termi and racing ecu gets wonderful milage.

(She is actually quite an advanced rider in case your wondering, lets just say that when riding with friends she is not the last in the pack, and often is mixing it up at the front, so she is using the motor)

We figure she averages about 47 mpg, and we usually don't get nervous about fueling till about 150 or more miles on a tank. Pretty sure we could go 170 miles with no issue, but that might be a push, literally.

This works out wonderful for us at the moment cause I am currently on a Triumph 675r that gets about the same range.

Cheers.

The 2010 796 had ABS as an option. The 2011 and up have standard ABS.

Part # for ABS tank 586.3.171.1C
Part # for non-ABS tank 586.3.171.1A

Im guessing the ABS tank is smaller also on the 796.

Thank you for the info.

Makes sense. I have to say, this whole thing kinda turned me off from the Monster ... I understand it's a Monster not a cruiser but 160 miles range makes it kinda inconvenient for me ... I was planning to use it as a commuter as well and my daily commute is 80 miles a day .. which means I'd have to fill it up every one and a half days ... to be safe.

Ugh.

That is one hell of a commute...

You're a tougher man than I, there is no way I could stomach that commute...unless it involved the Blue Ridge Parkway or something.

yeah it's a bit painful ... 40 miles to go, 40 miles to come back. I can get tiring.

I've already done it many times with my current bike (Kawasaki Versys) ... and at least the commute gets to be fun if I do it with the bike ...

Except it's a Kawasaki, not a Ducati ... and I wanted a Ducati since I was a kid.

PS: Multistrada is not an option ... I don't like dual sports (including the Versys). Too bulky, too tall and clumsy.
