2000 Monster 750 with 45K????
Hello... new to the forum here and in search of my first Ducati. Have ridden many other brands over the past 30 years or so but no direct experience with Ducati. Looking to get into a used Monster but used ones seem to be few and far between around here. I did stumble across a 2000 Dark 750. The bike looks to be in great shape (I have not ridden it yet) but it has a whopping 45,350 miles on it. Would I be foolish to even consider this bike with that many miles on it? Asking price is $2999 which seems high for a bike with that many miles.
Just looking for some feedback from the experts here. Any advice appreciated.

at that point it really depends a lot on the previous owners and how well they took care of the bike, how they rode it, where they rode it, and what else they did to it. i've seen an R6 once with 48K miles and it was still in good shape. if it seems to be in good condition and everything works well, i'd say $3k is not too bad (after all, it is a Ducati). however, a 12-year old bike with a twin engine that has 45000 miles will most likely give you some grief multiple times...and pretty soon. personally, i wouldn't buy any bike with more than 15,000 miles, but that's just me...i like the peace of mind of not having to worry about things breaking all the time. i've been looking at monsters too as a second bike and what i'd really like to get is a used 796 with under 10k miles, which typically go for about $6000-$7000

You will probably find interest in this thread on high-mileage Monsters.
That forum (the Ducati Monster Forum) could be a good place to ask the question, also.
Seems to me the mileage itself shouldn't bother you too much. The motors are robust, and the other parts reasonable quality and much like those on other bikes at the time in the price range.
In a way, the fact it has done that much work suggests it is a good example that has not given its owners much grief.
The other side of course is that parts wear and degrade with time and mileage on any bike, and Ducati parts tend to be costly.

Bring a mechanic with you to look it over. Or at the minimum another set of eyes. 45k is up there but if It has been well maintained it shouldn't matter. Usually it's the parts that require maintenance which are first to go, not the motor.

You may want to consider the difference between a carb'd Monster and a fuel injected Monster... In my case, I bought a 2000 m750 (carb'd) with 18k for just over 3k and a year later I found the bike that I really wanted:
2001 m900s ie (fuel injected) with 10k on the clock for just over 4k. The s model comes with an aluminum swing arm, adjustable suspension (rear and front) and dual disc brakes with gold-line mcs... Not to mention the steel tank (versus the newer plastic tanks) and no immobilizer system (no headaches)... Also has a newer style dash as well... And comes with a whole lot of CF... So you can see a lot can changes from model to model.
There are a lot of very well maintained Monsters with a way lesser miles and in the same price range. I wouldn't suggest settling for one till you can learn about the different models and what they have to offer.
Just my opinion... Winter is a good time to buy. Good luck!

If he has good records then you are fine. A well serviced 12 yr old bike with average 4k per year is better than a low mileage undocumented 12 year old bike. Carbs gum up, seals and stuff go bad when bikes sit. Check his records and offer $2700.
