It rusted after the first rain!

It rusted after the first rain!

Please take a look at the outer plates of the chain in the attached picture, they got rusted after the first rain. Is this normal? How do I get rid of that rust?

My bike (M1100 EVO) is quite new and the chain is always clean and lubed between the roller and bushings. I never spray the lubricant over the outside part of the chain because the dealer told me that this is not necessary.

Please advise,

David

Your dealer is right. There is no reason to put chain lube on the outer plates of an O-ring chain. The only reason is for rust prevention if you ride in the rain. So you really caused this problem. It has nothing to do with the chain being of poor quality or anything like that. You might be able to just wipe the rust off with a rag soaked with WD-40 or chain lube. Depending on how long you let the chain sit with the rust on it is the main issue. If it was only overnight this method would probably work. From the looks of your picture you may have let the chain sit for a longer period of time. If this is the case totally removing the rust will be more difficult.

I don't understand, are you actually saying that the bike was not built to be ridden in the rain? is this the only way to prevent rust from growing on the chain?!
it doesn't make any sense, not trying to be cynical but I really don't understand your saying..

This may help you understand about chain lubes.
How to Lube Your Motorcycle Chain

The bike can be ridden in the rain, but it will also require additional maintenance and cleaning afterwards.

Cleaning and re-lubing the chain.

The chain is not made by Ducati, any chain will rust if not properly maintained.

The chain is made by Regina, and I followed the cleaning and maintenance exactly as instructed on the following link, and according to the instructions posted by the manufacturer of this chain, no maintenance is required on the outer plates, so I still don't understand what I do wrong

REGINA CHAIN - Cleaning and lubrication

REGINA CHAIN - Cleaning and lubrication
The truth of the matter is the entire chain needs to be lubricated to prevent rusting. Some will purchase a plated chain to prevent this but the exposed rivets will still rust.
