Which monster will fit the bill!
Hi again monsters!,
I am on the fence from getting either a M1100EVO or a M796 The reasons why I'm pondering on this is that I want a black Monster and the color combo on the 796 (red trellis) is very appealing along with under seat exhaust. The 1100 EVO has higher HP plus ABS and TC which is great stuff for a few extra dollars, BUT on the 1100 I do not like the side exhaust and the black trellis it blends to much...... So, the question is, did any of yous had a 748/749 and you now have a M796 find them somewhat par in performance (not handling). I had a Triumph Speed Master (a good looker) but it was a dog pulling from 70 to 90 on the freeway and I do not want to be disappointed again! I like to test ride a M796 but the local roads by the dealer will not allow me to see if it performs to my expactations!
I'm sure power on tap on the 1100 will solve the HP concern but it's lacking the looks that I want and do not want to get into trellis painting and redo the exhaust, etc, etc...$$$
Just for comparison my previous bikes and looking at the numbers:
750 Supersport 64-HP 403-Lbs
748 SBK 97-HP 432-Lbs
749 SBK 108-HP 415-Lbs
Triumph 60-HP 500-Lbs
NEW 20011 MONSTERS
M796 87-HP 370-Lbs
M1100 100-HP 373-Lbs
Your comments are most welcome!

if you want power, get the 1100. My previous bike was a 07 FZ1, my current M796 feels very anemic compared to the liter bike. Still pulls harder than any 600cc jap bike ive owned. I was on the same boat as you, but I chose the M796 for the lower seat height and way easier clutch pull since I hit traffic every once in a while. The 796 doesnt really need the TC, since the motor is more tame which actually makes it easier to fly through the twisties!

If the money isn't an issue, get the M1100 EVO. There really is no contest between those engines. I agree with you about the exhaust, which is one of the main reasons I went with a use M1100s over an EVO. Take a look at the aftermarket exhaust systems for the EVO. There are some better looking options than stock. You might even be able to use the full Termi system from the M1100 (though this may require other changes).

I own a 998 and just purchased a Monster EVO. I too am a fan of the under tail exhaust, however since purchasing the EVO I also love the side mount exhaust..it kind of grows on you and is quite appealing. To me the trumpet style exhaust on the older M1100/796 etc has aged.
You won't be disappointed when the EVO sits in your garage!

Get the 1100 Evo, and just get a custom exhaust kit that routes the pipes under the tail. Also, most shops can paint your frame. Done.

OP, where are you located? Ducati dealers are usually cool about test rides for serious inquirers so I'm wondering why they won't allow you to ride it...?
I may be going thru a similar dilema and want to purposely ride the 796 first to get the proper feel/appreciation of the bigger engine. Unfortunately sold out so they won't have a demo 796 till closer to Spring...Rode their Triumph S3's and they were awesome.
Would love to try the S4R/S4RS as well but that won't be easy to find locally

enrico - If I understand you corectly, you prefer the looks of the 796, but prefer the power of the 1100Evo. Why not consider an '09-'10 1100? Only five ponies shy of the EVO, and negligably less torque, but has the same style underseat exhaust of the 796.

I agree with Ceasar57, take a look at my 1100 in the classifieds on this forum, great bike, I just have my eye on something else right now.

The 796 doesn't really feel underpowered until you ride with others on faster bikes. During last summers demo rides I got off of a Streetfighter and onto a Hyper 796. The Hyper 796 did feel very plain. Perfectly cabable, but not very exciting. Go for the 1100.
