For any Ducati under most conditions 10/40 is the best choice.

For 99.844777639942231% of all conditions, 10W40 is what you want. NO reason what so ever to run 20W50 in that motor. The lighter oil provides superior cooling in ALL conditions, less parasitic drag from pumping a heavier oil means hp and fuel economy. There is no reason at all to run a 20W50.

Besides, look in the book and you'll find 10W40 is the recommended oil. You don't even need a heavier oil if you're doing track days and/or running the snot out of it.

I guess its 10W-40 then, Amsoil website did show 20W-50 for an 07 S2R1000 but I guess thats out. the viscosity is just higher than the 10W-40, I'll order 4 quarts of the right oil and a filter. then do the service on it, its gonna cost $65 but worth it

FWIW, I did some research and the 02-07 Monsters state to use 10W-40 in the manual. The 08-up Monsters (and other Ducatis) state to use 15W-50. I didn't hear an explanation as to why it went to 15W-50 for 2008-up. The only major change to my 696's engine is the removal of the ball bearings for the camshafts, and it now relies on oil film for lubrication and as a bearing surface. This suggests I should use a 10W-40 because it travels up to the cams faster than a thicker 20W-50, but I'm not an engine expert.

I have a 2012 M796. Manual recommends 15W-50.

I'm using Motul 10w50 5100 semi in my carby SS, best of both worlds!

Not happy at running a thick 20w50, 10w40 wont give you a good hi-temp protection - 10w50 it is.

The Aprilia RSV4 specifies 15W-50 in the manual (Agip Tec 4T 15W-50). Amsoil recommends 20W-50 MCV for the RSV4 and Buell 1125R - both bikes can rev as high or higher than the Ducati engines.
