Blowing Tail-light Bulbs? Monster 620...

Hey all,

I am having an odd issue with my 06 M620ie. I keep blowing tail-light bulbs. Only the filament for the actual tail light, not the brake light, that has not been blown at all. I've had to replace 3 now. Obviously not expensive, but the only way I've found out that it was blown on all occasions was from other riders letting me know, at night... I'm very concious of my visibility anyway so I always try to flash my brakes, but still, I don't like the ghost bike idea. 3 bulbs in ~ 6 months seems excessive.

Has anyone else experienced anything similar? Any ideas what might be causing it? I figured something in the electrics could be a bit haywire, but I'm bloody terrible at messing with electrics so I hope not! I'm definitely putting the correct bulbs in as per the shop manual. I could put a more resistant bulb in I suppose (?) but I'd rather have the weak link be a bulb and not something more expensive...

Cheers for any ideas!

Tk

I don’t have a 620 or have not experienced this but here’s some thoughts. Voltage should be regulated and being as other electrical systems are working ok probably not a voltage issue, but I would check the voltage to the bulb at different engine rpm’s.
Is the tail light firmly mounted? Could be vibrations are shaking the filament to death.
Another option would be to replace the bulb with an LED conversion.

Are you referring to the light that illuminates your license plate?

I've had similar issues, but not as frequent as you have. I wrote about it here and got a few good pointers. But, as far as mine goes, I might just have to live with it.

My '07 GT1000 seems to be hard on tail light bulbs also. I've replaced 4 so far. I really think it's the shaking of the light. Just watching the light shake when I rev the motor with the bike on the side stand, is enough to make me wonder. I too have tried some cheap and some expensive bulbs. I just carry a spare now because I'm sure it's going out as soon as I really need it to be working!

+1 on the led bulb idea. I built a rebel for my kid with the light mounted on the swingarm. blowing bulbs every 3 days. put the Long Live incandescent blubs in and upped the lift to 10-14 days.
LEDs cured the problem.

Chopper Two
