M796 Oil Light Flashing

I have a 2012 Duc M796. Just installed a 14T sprocket, battery tender plug and a gear indicator that plugs into the 4 pin connector under the seat. Had to remove tank to access battery, but nothing was unplugged except for batt terminals. Took the bike for a quick test ride and to program the gear indicator by running it through all its gears. All of a sudden the Oil/warning light started flashing. Went home right away to investigate. Shut down engine, restarted it and the light was still flashing. Decided to read the owners manual only to find out there is a way to access the error codes/messages using the left hand switch.
Turned on bike to access error codes, none existed. Restarted bike, no more flashing light, and no error messages.

Anybody have a clue why I was getting a flashing oil light, and why no error codes exist? Does shutting down the engine reset the error codes??

I'm guessing that you have put a few miles on the bike and the oil light has not come on. So before your modifications things where fine. Lets hope for this. If I had to guess this has to do with something with the modifications done, or something that got disturbed during the installation process. Go over every wire that you touched or that is in the area near the installation of that gear indicator and under the gas tank. A connector could of got pulled on or a wire pinched somewhere and you didn't realize it. The gear indicator itself could be causing the problem. Sometimes inline piggyback devices can cause strange hiccups. I had this happen with an early Power Commander. Out of nowhere I would get a big stumble just off idle and then the check engine light would come on. Turn the key off and the light would go away and no codes could ever be traced. This happened with two different Power commanders. As soon as I took the PC out of the chain this never happened again.

In your case if your bike does have an oiling problem this is serious. It only takes a few seconds to do damage if the oil isn't circulating properly.

I know that the new gen monsters had an issue with the oil sensor wire shorting out/going bad.

My oil light popped on as well, and it was a simple fix at dealer and I believe is one of the ducati recalls. The wire for the sensor is next to the cylinder head and can burn through I believe.

That would definitely cause a problem. Hopefully that's what the OPs problem is. Just a faulty oil pressure sensor. He could trace the wires up from the sensor and check for heat damage.

I confused myself with the oil light and engine check light. So no errors on the screen.

I know I didnt touch any wires except for the 4 pin connector. Nothing was unplugged. had 80 miles on the new bike when the light started flashing and fading in and out. Rode it again this morning, after 3 miles, the light started flashing again, decided to head home when the light went out. So rode for another 85 miles, no oil light and no error messages. hopefully it stays off!

Something is wrong with the bike. It doesn't matter if you caused this or not. It's not fixed.

Disconnect the gear indicator and take it for a run. That's the easiest step in the process of elimination

I know the oil pump is working because when I start the bike, the oil gets sucked away from the sight glass, so not too worried about oil pressure loss and looks more like an electrical problem. I saw the recall for the 696 where the oil wire touches the exhaust. Inspected the wire and it looks fine. Prior to the light coming on, Ive only ridden the bike once and put 80 miles on it. Rode the bike again for 2 hours, light remains off. If it goes on again, Ill unplug the gear indicator and do another test drive.
Ive read other forums where folks wash their bike and the light turns on. Mine was pressure washed last week by the dealer before delivery, motor was all wet.

Could be a loose sensor. When your riding there is vibration causing it to go on/off...

Take to dealership, its under warranty, have them fix....

I'd say it's resolved...for now...and a non issue.

Which gear indicator did you go with? Plug and play sounds wonderful. I never got around to installing mine from Gipro on the 1100s due to so many "splices".
