S2R1000 or M1100 - HELP!
Just sold my ST4s and want a Monster so I need a little help.
I'll need heated gear. Will Monsters handle it? I've searched but can't find the alternator output anywhere.
How are the headlights on these things?
I'm looking at an '06 red/red S2R1000 - stock - 5k miles - $6000
or
a 2010 M1100 w/ABS (not an S - can't afford it) - 3500 miles - for $8500.
Which would you choose? (yes, money is an object. with taxes, etc., that's $2800+ difference)
Thanks in advance

personally, i'd go for the newer bike.
although i prefer the "look" of the old monster, the current bikes are a step forward technologically, and i don't think anyone would argue that point.
i've ridden a friends 1100 evo and love it. all it needs is a 998 testastretta jammed in there

Based on those, the 1100. Of course I'm biased

What! Are you crazy!
Just kidding. I agree with lumox. I'm a fan of ABS so that's worth some extra. But if cash is tight don't feel like the S2R is a big step down. They are wonderful bikes for what they are

I see you have an S2r1000 so you'd be the guy to ask - have you had the chance to ride the newer version?

No I haven't. But TheLumox had an S4R and it's very similar to the S2R except for the motor. We've talked many times about the shortcomings these bikes share. The stock suspensions are very harsh on rough roads. But we both agree that we love the bikes and have a blast riding them. He's ridden the newer Monster and feels the suspension is quite a bit better and the ergos a bit more comfortable. I'd trust his opinion on this.
I'd go ride them and pay reticular attention on how the suspension feels on rough pavement. Depending on where and how you ride the difference might be important.
I've put about $1000 into Gold Valves for my forks and an Ohlins rear shock. Made a very noticeable difference but I did all the work myself so i was able to save on labor. It's still not great but probably puts it at least equal to the newer models.

Thank you, Duckman!
I think I'm going for the 1100.
Just wish it was red on red.
Still wondering about the lights, though. Think I'll ask in a new thread.
Thanks again.

Red tank & black frame, Casey (my kid's name, BTW).
Bike was apparently black and in perfect condition (3500 miles) when traded in and the dealer had a buyer for a new red one who wanted a black tank on his new red frame so the dealer switched all the plastics.
Chances are pretty slim of seeing that combo around town. It's a sure-fire conversation starter if I ever bump into that guy.
Here's the dealer's ad - whadayathink?
