Early oil change before 600 mile service

Has anyone here changed their oil way before the 600 mile service? I've read articles where you need to flush out the metal shavings in the engine. Doesn't the oil filter catch these contaminants?

That's typically why there is a 600 mile service......... Why would you want to do one sooner? Just a waste of money and oil......
