Speedometer Off
Was doing some riding with a friend who had a gps on his bike and we started comparing my MPH on my speedometer vs the gps. As my speed increased, the difference between the gps and my speedometer got larger and larger. It was almost 10 MPH off at 70, my speedometer read 80 but I was really only going 70.
I stopped my by my local dealership and they said that was normal and factory set. They also said that they can't fix it. I'm very disappointed about this, I want to know my actual speed!!!! I don't think thats to much to ask for.
Also, what is doing to my mileage??? Seems to me like I'm racking up more miles then I'm actually riding. How can that be legal?
Anyway, does anyone know if this can be fixed??
Thanks and ride safe.

normal. not much you can do about it. Cars are similar. Speed readings also change with tire wear.

well if it's llike the streetfighter, the manual even says that the indicated speed is 8% more than actual speed.

I think if you check your odometer against mile markers you will find it's perfect.
But yeah, the speedometer on my 696 is off by about 10 percent.

Same story with my 2007 ST3
The original dashboard (speedo) read fairly accurately.
Probably 2-3% high
I had a new dashoboard fitted, and there was a very noticable discrepancy.
I had a mate with a GPS ride in front of me, and he raised his left hand to indicate every 10 KPH increase in speed.
It went something like this,,,,, GPS speed / indicated speed
80 / 84
90 / 96
100 / 108
110 / 120
120 / 132
130 / 144
140 / 156
Theres a definate trend there
The speedo reads high by a consistent 8%
So to get it somewhere close to being right, I ride at around an indicated 10% higher than the speed limit, which is easier to mentally calculate than 8%.
For something this is supposed to be a "instrument" ,,,, the Ducati speedo is a joke.
My bike runs stock everything that could impact upon speedo reading, so why can't they get it closer than 8% variance ? ? ?

From the reading/research I've done, 8% is exactly what it ought to be assuming the rear tire has the correct OD.
The story goes that in the EU, speedometers are allowed to read up to 16% high but are under no circumstances allowed to read low. So Ducati calibrate theirs dead in the middle of that 16% margin. That said, your odometer should read deadly accurate on actual distance (as previously mentioned).

Mileage on the bike is logged correctly. The speed displayed is 8% greater than actual per the manual. Like you said, the faster you go the greater the difference between displayed/actual speed.

Yeah, ditto on the 696. I kept wondering why I'm usually one of the faster cars on the highway when I drive to work, but when I ride, cars seem to blow by me. Still, it would be nice to know instead of playing the guessing game all the time.
