Angry '09 M1100S Electrical Gremlin?

The last couple of weeks I have noticed the Monster just cuts out then the motor starts again instantainiously (almost like shutting the throttle off and on again). Today it cut out and would not restart. I turned off the key and back on a couple of times then it would restart, run for about 500 yards and then stop again. I thought it may be the sidestand switch as the starter button would not work at all and then the engine warning light would come on. Switch off to reset everything and away it went for a while longer. Fuel does not seem to be the issue. I have Termis and performance ECU. Any suggestions? ECU on the fritz? Poor connection somewhere maybe? Where should I start looking?

Thanks.

Probably a short.

I would start at the back of the gauge cluster and follow the wire loom as it goes past the top triple and weaves to the trellis. I had a problem there, DUC decided not to put any abrasion guard on the wire harness, then mounted it against a rough cast triple. In just 3000 miles mine had sawed through the looming and was starting on the wires.

If you have a tail eliminator, commonly the wires get pinched and short there as well.

My headlight connector also burnt a pin, it is common, and while mine just lost the headlight altogether, somepeople have had their bike die and not start because of it.

Could also be loose battery leads, these things do vibrate a bit.

good luck

check simple things first..... battery and its connections.... also what is the last thing or two you have done to the bike? like tail lights or turn signals.... almost always a problem that is so easy that its often overlooked...

CanberraDave: I had a very similar sounding problem, long story short, the side stand cut off switch wasn't plugged in completely to the wiring loom from the factory. Best thing to do is pull the plastic oil cooler surround off the left side, the connector resides in there somewhere. Disconnect the plug and with a multimeter do a continuity test on the switch. Off memory there's three wires, common, open and closed. Test with stand in both positions to verify that the switch is working correctly. If you don't get a positive test you've found your problem, also give it a bit of a wiggle whilst doing the test as it sounds like the problem could be intermittent

Have you been getting a check engine light? What error code are you getting?
