Dry clutch question
My M1100 has 6800 miles and groans or has the "Chewbacca noise" off the line. I have read tons of threads on here and talked to a few people and have a couple questions.
I know my clutch plates need to come out and be cleaned, there is a good write up on here for that. But I have had people tell me or read that:
1. Keep the clutch plates in the exact order they come out as per the service manual.
or
2. They "Turn the plates around on reassembly to even out the wear."
My questions are in regards to option 2.
Is this a recommended practice?
Do you turn just the friction plates around after cleaning when reinstalling?
I assume friction plates and the metal plates bed or mate together just like brake rotors and pads, so do you swap both around?
I'm imagining you take the whole "stack of plates" and turn them around 180deg in order...
Anybody have pics or insight for me?
Thanks

There is no big mystery about the plates, there is one concave plate that is best kept in the original placement in the stack, You can move the fiber plates around in the stack to help them wear more evenly. Its not as hard as some folks make it out to be...

^^ So how is the wear usually distributed?
Do the inner plates wear more than the outer?
Or does one side of the plates (motor side vs cover side) wear faster than the other?

From my limited experience... the fiber discs near the concave metal plate seem to show the most wear. Once you remove the plates you will notice some discoloration on some of the metal and fiber plates. Swap the most worn fiber plates around, also noting the wear on the tangs of the fiber plates... and switch them around to even the wear out.
The metal plates will show some discoloration, ie " hot spots".This is when you sand them down on a flat surface and relocate them the best you can while trying to maintain the original configuration of the clutch pack. Follow the the advise you have seen on cleaning the clutch pack and always bleed the hydraulics after reassembly.
Child's play...
Good luck!
