Help! M620 Oil Leak - Pics

Gday everyone,

I walked out to the Monster the other day to see a couple of tiny drops of oil on the ground beneath the engines left side, of course I got pedantic and dug out the head-torch The bikes a 2006 M620 with ~ 20,000km's on the clock. Anyway, turns out there is a little oil leak coming from the generator cover/case joint. This being my first Duc I'm not too sure how the liquid gaskets work but I did notice when I was cleaning the bike for the very first time there was a little "fringe" of excess gasket sticking out between the case and cover. I accidentally rubbed some of this off... It didn't seem like it did any damage to the gasket between the mating surfaces - but I guess who knows? This is a pic of the "fringe" I'm taking about - you can see the arrow is pointing to where it has had a bit rubbed of.

This next one is a pic of the actual cover (clearly!). The arrow on the left shows where the oil's pooling/dripping, I noticed a little bit weeping through down behind the front sprocket too where the other arrow is.

As the pic shows, it's not a huge leak but I'd like to fix it up all the same! The bike is going in for a 20,000km service shortly but I am going to do a lot of that service myself so hopefully the shop won't have to drain the oil. I wondered if because of that I might be able to fix up this leak myself. What do you guys think is likely to be causing it? A worn gasket, damaged cover, under-torqued bolts?... I've really got no idea how long that gasket has been there but I would assume it could be 20,000ks/5 years old - is it usual that they might start to fail after that timeframe?

As you can probably see I'm a little lost of where to start here, whats the best way to go about sealing her up again? Anyone else had a similar issue?

Cheers for any help!

Tk

id be checking to make sure your bolts are tight all the v twin rumble might have caused them to lose tension

if that fails remove cover clean and use something like ultragray from permatex, repco supercheap sell it

if your not upto the task let the bike shop take care of it which wont be cheap but least they have the experince

yep, this very thing occured to me. bolts worked themselves loose (or the gasket material shrunk) after a few years.

tightened them up and no further probs for over a year now.

Righto, I'll have a good look at them. I did snug the bottom couple up a little, but my torque wrench only goes down to 20nm... Did you guys tighten them up to the stock torque or go a bit past it? I guess I'll go from simple to difficult - try the bolts, have a look at the clutch slave, and if all else fails check the pushrod orings/redo the gasket. Will let you know the outcome! Cheers for the help.

dont overtighten you will damage/snap

good method that I use might not work for you is just a good allen key in the hand and do it up firm not over tight, last thing thing you want is to do damage

nip them up give it a good degrease and see how you go, my last 600ss used to leak oil I think its a ducati trait, as long as its not pouring out a minor weep isnt a big concern
