Oro Nero

hi all

had a pm from daniel in Oz asking about my oro nero that i bought a few months ago (hi daniel - clapham/battersea area!)

would anyone be interested in a write up/report on it? i could rustle up some info about - dyno figures, cam timing, actual weight, wheel weights, tyres, etc etc, etc.

It is the only one in the UK. It is the best bike that I have ever ridden, light and grunty. It easily eclipses the 1098s tricolore (soon to be for sale) that i have in three significant areas:

1. Although both biked make 155 bhp, the shape of the oro nero power curve is much better for road riding than 1098s whose power is at the unuseable top end. down to walboro ecu.

2. much easier to change direction, probably helped by lighter wheels. it is quite a physical effort to get the 1098 to turn. lift the 1098 off its sidestand and you can feel a bulk/mass below you. do the same with the oro nero and there is a noticeably lighter mass to lift.

3. general specification of components: decent quality brembo front brake m/c and clutch m/c, wheel spec, tyres ( came with dunlop sportsmax gp racers track/fast road type).

only 1 bad point that i have found so far: the mirrors. with the glass at its highest point of adjustability, you still look down at the tarmac. any ideas anyone?

if anyone is interested i will post more info tomorrow.

dick

ps This bike is a masterclass in Bimota engineering, the peak of why we all admire this company: billet alloy and carbon fibre = thing of beauty and light. good ergonomic riding position as well.

Yes! I would like to know how the cam timing differs from its 1098 cousin.
Or more simply, what is the cam timing on the DB7?

I've been wondering what role the cam timing plays in their clearly different power curves.

Thanks in advance.

a) The mirror arms have a detent position dependant on features located in both segments of the arm.
You may access the detent features by removing the mirror assembly from the fairing and disassembling the arm.
The detents could be altered in a number of ways, but would leave the arm segments misaligned slightly.

b) One could slot the mounting holes in the nose fairing. Horrible thought, but a minor rotation will go a long way. I don't think the minor rotation would reveal any unsightly bits under the mount.

c) Can't think of any easy way to make a person shorter.

d) If you remove the clear signal lens, the bulb & reflector comes out, providing full access to the torx holding the mirror pivot ball mount assembly in place. Remove the torx and it all comes out. Then you could tell if the mirror movement is limited by the housing or the pivot ball assembly, and modify accordingly.
I have mine apart for painting, so I'll have a peek this week.

Hi Dick, thanks for taking the time to reply to me. I for one would be very interested to hear your write up on the oro especially if you have some time on the standard bike as well. I'm looking to trying to get a standard DB7 into Oz at the moment following the importer disappearing a while ago now. I heard a rumor a while ago that the factory might be making the carbon frame and swing arm options and if this is the case then it might be possible to upgrade the standard bike to oro spec.

I'd be interesting in your comments on the usability of the bike day to day, is it something you could ride each day or for long periods of time?

Regards,

Daniel

hi all

will post more techy details tomorrow.

The riding position is good, much better out of the crate then your usual ducati superbike. I would say that it could be used comfortably day to day.

I know the UK bimota importer chap here, who up to last week has a DB7 for sale: ex demonstrator, about 4000 miles i think, slightly cosmetically tatty (though nothing severe). I had a ride on it in the summer but decided to go for the or nero instead. I was so close to buying the same standard DB7 that i had compression test and leakdown tests done and all was fine.........oh yes and a dyno run. If you are interested in this bike, let me know.

vic: thanks for info on the mirror adjustablity, will give it a go sometime.

djt77 - Can't comment from standard DB7 to Oro,
but the standard DB7 is a better all around bike than a 1098.
More comfort, less heat. Done.

With the bargain prices now, go for it.
Just don't go expecting to find Bimota parts presently. Bimota appears to be dormant again.....

mirrors

As far as the mirrors on the DB7, this is one way to go. A little labor intensive as the bars are solid, but but this worked out well and the view to the rear is great. All Oberon parts.

hi all

here goes for more oro nero info.

1. the clutch is a little on the heavy side so i will fit an oberon slave cylinder.

2. according to may maths calcs, it is geared for 175 mph. i am planning to go +2 on rear sprocket. stock gearing 15/38

3. The catalytic converter: i am reliably informed that on cutting this out, there will be about a 3-5 kg saving and about 5 more bhps and ft/lb throughout the rev range. i think that i will do this.

4. Wheel (only) weights: front 2.8 kg rear 4.4 kg. wheel manufacturer on rim states only "bimota"

5. actual measured weight at 185 kg with tank about 1/4 full.

6. ducati 6 post ball ramp slipper clutch.

7. changed to michelin power one street tyres.

8. engine news: stock output 145 bhp and 78 ft/lb. Cam timing set to factory specs and fuel adjustment to ecu (NB runs closed loop system so PC cant be fitted). this yielded 155 bhp and 86 ft/lb. The key here is the shape of the curves compared to a ducati 1098 and variants. much fatter mid range, about 5-7 bhp at 5000 - 75000 rpm more for oro nero than my 1098s tricolore. due to walboro ecu used by bimota. all work carried out by UK's premier ducati engine builders, JHP in Coventry. can't comment on any other other cam timing experimentation.

9. suspension news: none really, front and rear sags set. i have only done 20 miles on this bike before winter set in here, so minorish alterations to finish with screwdriver in back pocket next spring. all seems compliant and supple.

happy to post picture if i knew how to upload photo!
