Front brake disc question

I have a Bimota DB2 (the bike is really irrelavent) which has very nice new Brembo brakes. They are of the type all sport bikes now have where the disc is held in place by location discs that are in turn held on by E clips. Mine are quite loose (the disc moves back and forth from side to side by over 1/16th") I have seen others and felt how tight they are and all have been tighter.
So the big question are they safe this way?

They stop the bike like I have a jet engine pushing me back so this has not been an issue. Other than noise and my wondering it seems ok.

One other question is if these are too loose then do the retaining discs come in different sizes (dia and thickness)? This woudl most likely change the situation.
Thanks

You have full floating rotors versus semi floating. When I had an ST4s I upgraded the rotors to Braketech Axis full floating rotors. The disc itself was really loose, but man did those things stop!!! No worries mate.

Well it does seem, at times (you know when the light turns read and the cop is at the corner eg.), that the rear wheel lifts a bit. But then I never really have time or the death wish to look and make sure!

Thanks alot.

As above, your discs are full floaters. There are a few variations on this theme; semi floaters which are set up the same as full floaters but have a conical (Bellville) washer behind the E clip that provides a bit of pre load to the disc and stops it rattling - a few of the 900 SLs and 851s were set up this way. Then there are also fixed rotors where the disc is riveted to the carrier so there is no movement except the flex in the carrier. Then there are solid rotors where the disc and carrier are cast as a single piece. You are right about the effectiveness of the set up on the DB2, I found the stopping power outstanding.
