Adverse affects of magnetic tank bags or protectors?

I have a 2004 ST4s and was wondering if magnetic tank bags or protectors would have any adverse affects on the Ducati ignition keys? I followed a post on the affects on laptops, but was wondering if it might also mess up the programmed keys?

I've used a MagKnight tank protector for years with no ill effects on the chipped keys as far as I can tell.

I have a 2003 ST4s and have never had a problem using my Marsee magnetic bag.

As far as I know, Ducati keys contain RFID chips. You can't destroy and RFID chip with a magnet. Google the web and you'll find a lot on the subject of RFID. Here's an FAQ I found...

http://www.stoprfid.de/en/faqengl.html

...and here's a quote from the above site...

Quote:
Can a magnet destroy an RFID chip?

No. The chip information is not stored magnetically. Use of a magnet or other erasing devices has no effect whatsoever on the chip. In December 2003 we tried the professional hard-disk eraser [Externer Link] "Degauser" from IBAS: The chip remained functional without any disturbance.
The RFID chips in Ducati keys are passive, i.e. they don't transmit a code until they are placed in the presence of an appropriate electro-magnetic field. There's a circular aerial around your key switch which transmits energy to the key and reads the transmitted code when you turn the ignition on.

Don't worry. Magnetic tank bags can't damage your keys.

You get better gas mileage with a magnetic tank bag right? Isn't that what they're for?

Wink That ain't the half of it...read on.

That is substantially true, but most ST riders seem to achieve the same effect by wearing an aluminum foil skull cap inside their helmets. Cuts down on the RF emissions that are monitored 24/7 by the highway patrol as well.

Will magnetic tank bags etc. pull rust in the tank to the outer surface?

No the magnets act like a flux capacitor.

Part of my job is field service for MRI machines. MRIs have stupid crazy pull-a-screwdriver-out-of-your-hand powerful magnets. Although I am very careful to remove everything from my pockets (especially credit cards) before going in to the room, I have forgotten to remove my car keys on occasion. My car has the same chip in the key deal as our Ducs. No issues, ever... I'm guessing you'll be fine with a magnetic tank bag unless you happen to have one with magnets more powerful than 1.5 Tesla! Then I can't say for sure!

Oh, the foil hat thing is a good idea! They will never get my thoughts!
