Singing praises of FIM Ultimap chip
Just put in an Ultimap 161 on my ST2 with Ferracci's. WOW, it took about five minutes to install and solved every complaint I have had since I put on the slip-ons. The high idle that lasted for a bit at every stop light is gone, the hesitation is gone....and going by seat of the pants I gained some ponies for sure. All for $189 and five minutes of my time to take off the seat, take the rubber cover off where the OEM chip is, pull it with the supplied tongs and pop in the new chip.
Thanks for all that gave me advice when I was considering the chip!
My only question now is what benefit, if any, would a K&N or like air filter give and will the chip still work so well?

Congratulations on your chip purchase. The chip will work with a K & N or like filter installed. One benefit would be cleanability with the gauze type filter, just wash and reuse, and supposedly higher airflow ( but I don't think you will feel any additional power). Either way the chip and pipe combo make a major difference in seat of the pants feel as well as cleaner running.

Some of us are not so lucky as to be able to replace only a chip. Glad it worked out for you.

From whom did you purchase the Ultimap 161? I have a 1999 ST2 with a K&N airfilter and Sil Motor CF mufflers. I'm interested in whether the chip would make any difference in my bike's performance.

My 1998 ST2 came with DP pipes and chip (stock airbox--go figure!). Anyway, I did try the factory chip one day a couple of years ago. I couldn't wait to get it home to place the DP one back in there! Much leaner with the factory chip. Popping on decel, and even a few coughs thru the airbox. Runs spot-on with the performance chip.
I've since modified my ar box lid, tried a K&N for one season. Now I run paper element with the open lid, and I save the K&N for very spirited riding days/trips.

Joey,
I bought the chip from my local dealer who ordered it for me. It took about 10 days to come in. You can also order yourself off the internet: http://www.bcmducati.com/catalogCatagory.cfm?id=49
It should help your bike alot, though you have the K&N and I do not and the chip is specifically (and stated by FIM) to be for stock intake and slip ons.
There would have to be some improvement over the lean stock chip, though. A more expensive option is a power commander dyno tuned but that is much more money.
I would try the chip first, your tech can adjust from there somewhat and probably get it going well.
Or-put back the Ducati filter. Here is FIM on K&N:
We map all our eproms for standard OEM air filters. The large paper cartridge type fitted to Ducatis works extremely well, and our tests with other types have revealed greater airflow restrictions than the stock filters. Therefore we do not recommend or reject any aftermarket air filters.
"For some reason we have enquiries about our EPROMs for K&N filters : We have never produced EPROMs for K&N filters ! If you have an eprom with our name on it (either FIM or UltiMap) which purports to fit K&N filters, please contact us with the name of the dealer you bought it from. We do not wish to see our name on product which we did not manufacture !"
