Lightbulb 2005 ST4s Instrument cluster/console rattle

Twice I have had to undo my instrument cluster - once to tighten the mirror bolts, and once to install the sport touring windscreen. Now my instrument cluster makes an annoying rattle at low-speeds and when crossing over the lane-markers on the freeway.

Can anyone suggest a fix? It might be just that the tongue of the bottom plastic bit below the instrument panel which goes around/toward the steering head needs to be lined with some rubberized something-or-other, but I just thought I'd ask here, in case there is a well-known fix. (okay, searching here brought up nothing, but i thought i'd ask anyway)

Thanks in advance.
Scott

You are correct some rubber lining or foam backing on that section should do the trick.

Check the mounting bolts

You may also want to check the rubber mounting bolts on the instrument cluster. The two sided bolt breaks pretty easily if over torqued. I got a replacement from my Duc dealer which solved my instrument cluster wobble.

Raj, Thanks for your reply. I am not sure what two-sided bolt you are speaking of. Can you give me any further details? Is it on the back of the cluster, so i'd need to take it all apart again to check it? (I'm just trying to avoid taking the whole thing apart several times) Or are you speaking of one of the anchors for the console's trim?

My dealer placed a piece of foam rubber under the central section of the dash which fixed the rattle on my bike (ST3s 2006), which I believe has the same dash and fairings as your bike.

The bolts I am talking about are the ones that go into the instrument cluster on one end. Then you use a nut on the other end to secure it to the plastic dash panel. They are threaded on both ends with a rubber spacer between. They are the part right next to number 13 in this schematic: Schematic (Bike Bandit)

Since the part is two screws embeded in the rubber spacer, one bolt can break loose but still appear to be attached. I had one do this. So it looked bolted tight from the back of the plastic panel, but was loose at the instrument cluster.

On all the later model STs I have seen the instrument cluster stands a little off the plastic instrument panel. It shouldnt be touching the panel at all.

*********
Okay, I read your post again (which I should have done better the first time). If the noise is coming from the plastic panel that goes up against the headstock (part 6 in the schematic), a piece of foam stuck to underside should do the trick.

Sounds like the rattle that developed on my ST3 after about the 3rd service, which I figured out was the black plastic "tongue" that goes horizontally back from the dash toward the triple clamp & stem banging against the frame under it. I'm not sure what kept it from rattling when new, but I used a half-inch square of velcro to attach the free end to the steering head under it (a tip from someone else here) - problem cured.
