'06 ST3s Staintune Application Question
New member, first post. Be gentle
I just purchased an '06 ST3s and I'm trying to order Staintunes. My Duc dealer shows the following from his source or distributor:
ST3 WITHOUT O2 SENSOR OVAL SLIP-ONS** (Does not work on O2 sensor models) 413A3
He called the distributor for the U.S. and confirmed they are a no fit. Anyone else run across this? Is this a CYA maneuver on the part of the distributor over emissions? I've searched the Sport Touring forum and have not found any reference to this issue. It appears plenty of members have installed Staintunes on an ST3. Even the Staintune site shows a set for the '06 model.
I've tried contacting Staintune by email and a call to Australia. No reply.
Any clarification would be most appreciated.

I believe the Staintunes will fit fine but the kicker is that you'll need a new DP ECU since your stock ECU is set-up to recognize the lambda sensor on the left pipe and to my knowledge, the stock ECU cannot be adjusted to correct for this. I'm in the same boat ...I've got an 06' and I'm about ready to buy new slipons but I'll need to upgrade my ECU to the Ducati Performance one, which are $599 (reflashed) through Houston Superbikes/Desmo Porsche.

Just throwing this out, why not get a bung for the sensor welded to the pipes?
Have a good one.

Installing Staintunes has no effect on your O2 sensor, it remains in place.
You will definitely want to upgrade your ECU to a DP ECU, or a remap as Steve said, but it isn't required. When/if you do remap though, the O2 sensor is eliminated. Your EFI will be open loop all the time.
Mine ran like shit below 4,000 rpm with the stock mufflers, just like it runs like shit below 4,000 rpm now, with the Staintunes. Unfortunately I still haven't remapped.

I think the set he was looking at were not for the 06' to 07' models. The description of the set he was looking at specifically stated ST3 w/o the O2 sensor (i.e. pre 2006 ST3) so on that set, there is no port for the O2 sensor to fit into. It may be that the retailer he's looking at doesn't carry them for the 06' and 07' but as you mentioned, Staintunes does make them for these years. Your bike runs like shit and so does mine ...the best advice for him is to get the pipes w/o the need for the sensor (like what he's looking at now) and get a DP ECU and have it remapped/reprogrammed for his bike. My bike is getting so bad I almost dread even riding it anymore b/c of that damn sensor and whole lean running issue ...I'm in the process of getting this corrected once and for all. I can't keep stalling in heavy traffic like I do EVERY time I ride the damn thing. Someone is going to run me over at some point.

They're slip on cannisters. The O2 sensor is threaded into the horizontal cylinder's header pipe.
IIRC, the reason for that whole "except for O2 sensor equipped bikes" line 'o bull, is much the same as the "for off road use only" line 'o bull some other aftermarket exhaust manufacturers use. On an '06 or '07 ST3, when you remove the stock mufflers, you're also removing the catalytic converters. That is a no no, and the aftermarket exhaust manufacturer has to cover his ass, legally speaking.

Thanks for the insight on this. The wording on:
ST3 WITHOUT O2 SENSOR OVAL SLIP-ONS** (Does not work on O2 sensor models) 413A3
is interpreted as model 413A3 can be used on ST3's that do not have an O2 sensor. My ST3s is stock and thus has the O2 sensor. I was not trying to eliminate the sensor, however several responses have indicated that a DP ECU or remap is required and the O2 sensor would no longer be needed.
It is my understanding that the '06/'07's were all closed loop, thus the O2 sensor. There in lies the confusion. I am aware of the Staintune website. It specifically lists an application for the ST3, stating that their exhaust is the same for all ST's, part number DU MS ST4 3&2. Can someone explain if all the Staintune ST exhausts are the same, how the different diameters are fitted?
Being in California with all the emissions rules, this smells of a CYA manuever on the part of the distributor.
Thanks again for the responses. I'll move forward on the Staintunes and the ECU as needed.
