Late Model ST4S Instrument Panel Debug
The Readers Digest version of all this is that I bought a ECU that was supposed to be a ST4S open exhaust. Turns out it was a Multistrada instead. Close, but doesn't work. Wouldn't start, so back in with the original. While playing with the A-B keys to cycle models with the MTS ECU, I ended up with the panel now coming up with MTS even with the ST4S ECU back in. It didn't do that before when I just installed it and swapped the original ECU back in, but that's electronics.
It now works OK with the original, but I get no coolant temperature. Just
---- flashing and no EOBD light, which the Workshop Manual says the EODB light also needs to be lit to indicate no communication from sensor. Local dealer believes I need a new instrument panel to resolve this. I'm looking at a couple of options:
1) Can an instrument panel be wiped to a virgin like an ECU? It looks like a shop in the UK called Scorpion may be able to. Maybe someone in USA could also.
2) If I replace the instrument panel, what is the proper procedure?
I have a workshop manual, but it gives me no guidance in replacing the panel.
From what I've read in the various posts, I think I swap it out and use the red key to power it up the first time to sync it with the key switch and ECU.

I find it interesting that the panel is not responding to the ECU re the display. I didn't think the pod "stored" any data. I thought that was all in the ecu. Maybe not?
Did you disconnect the pod when you switched the ECU's? Maybe try starting there. If you have the factory service manual it describes how to set up your panel display for either the ST3 or ST4s for Europe or the US and toggling through that series to get set to ST4s, US may help. AFAIK, you will need the red key and *perhaps* the service card to program a new pod, ie the key to match the pod with the bike/ecu, and the service card to program the immobiliser. (?) When I had my pod replaced the first time, the shop wanted the card, but I can't remember if they asked for it the second time.

Thanks for the reply, Frank. I didn't unplug the pod when I switched ECU's, just pulled the battery connections. It seems the problem was created when I toggled through the MTS model choices and exited with the 1000 US. Afterward, when I re-installed the ST4S ECU, I tried the same thing with it, but the only choices I got were MTS models still. It starts up and ran, showed the correct mileage & fuel level. I just figured I'd have to live with the MTS logo coming up every power on. First ride of the season was when I discovered the non-functional coolant reading. Dealer guessed that the ECU corrupted the pod and I could either replace it or install a temp gauge. I think I'd rather go the instrument panel route. If I go with a new panel, I don't want to render expensive electronics harm by not linking the ECU, new panel and key antennae properly. I got myself here by trying the red key on the MTS ECU the first time when it wouldn't start and then played around with it, so time to follow the triage motto, "first do no harm"

I just sent the Dash from my 848 to SOS Diagnostics in Canby Oregon for extraction of the immobilizer code and programming of a new black key. I know they do all manner of Dash Unit programming and may be able to help (p.s. their customer service is dynamite.. two day turn around). Take a look at S.O.S. Diagnostics - Automotive Programming and Diagnostics and shoot them an email to see if it's a problem they can tackle.
Best regards,
Josh

You say the mileage was the same, as in the pre-MTS1100 ecu install odometer reading remained correct? If so I guess information is stored in the pod, but I take mine off my bike for 5-6 months at a time to store indoors during the winter months and have never had an issue re lost data, that's why I thought that information was stored in the ecu, but the fact that you changed ECU's and had the same odo reading must mean the pod maintains date, and therefore must have a battery in it?
In any case, if the pod was "corrupted" by one ECU, then couldn't it be "re-corrupted" by the other? The pods between those bikes are the same afaik. I'd say wait until you explore other options, like unplugging and replugging your pod with the ST4 ECU attached, battery connected, or as per the previous post check-out an electronics dash service provider. Those pods are fairly expensive IIRC, like 1700.00.

Good one, Josh. That's what I was hoping may be the final solution.
Regarding the odometer. It did change along with fuel level between ECU's. I meant the opposite previously, that it read correctly when I re-installed the original ECU back in.

Can you not refit the MTS ECU , scroll through the options back to the '4s' and then refit your standard chip ?
