Master Link Removal

I'm trying to fit an engine case guard in front of the sprocket but can't get the master link loose. Removed the clip, pryed on the plate a little but was worried about damaging the chain so didn't take the persuader to it yet. What is the best way to remove that link?

Also, the plate that holds the front sprocket on looks a little odd. It appears that the teeth on the plate are nearly worn off. I recall reading something about replacement of this plate on early models? Is that correct?

Love winter maintenance time.

You don't have to split the chain to take it off.

Remove the hugger, Take off the sprocket cover (sounds like you already have that off) take off the sprocket retainer (sounds like you need a new one) and then just slide the sprocket off with the chain on it.

If it's a bit tight, loosen the rear wheel nuts and the backplate nuts and slide the wheel forward to give you more free play.

Actually you don't really need to remove the hugger unless you want to get the whole chain off completely. But as I mentioned previously, you can get the whole chain off without splitting it. You may also have to loosen the lhs front footpeg bolts.

Get some new sprocket retainer bolts before refitting, and don't forget to threadlock them.

Definitely replace that plate! The master link sounds like a riveted style, you would need a chain beaker, a new link and then a press to reinstall. Or remove the hugger, left side exhaust pipe, rear wheel, foot peg bracket and give it a good cleaning while its off.

If your case guard looks like this you don't have to take the chain off to install it.

You don't have to completely remove it either - just remove the bolt securing the can, and rotate it downward onto a conveniently placed rag/towel/old jumper or whatever.

Best post yet.

Know I know for when I get round to installing one.
I've been meaning to get hold of a couple for ages if I'm honest.

I have an aftermarket clutch slave that seems to be in the way just slightly. It's preventing me from being able to slide the sprocket off. I will give it another go. What's a good source for that sprocket plate and bolts?

Loosen the slave bolts a little until you can gently wiggle it out of the way. You won't loose any fluid.
I have to do this to remove the sprocket cover too.

Yup. Got the PDF. I'll check on dealers nearby. Good to know I can back the slave cylinder off a bit. With the engine guard I may need to remove it completely. Just drain the clutch fluid and unbolt?
