Need help with starter sprag removal / installation

I've gotten the flywheel off my bike and discovered the spring to the starter sprag had exploded. I went ahead and ordered a new sprag, which I have now. I can't figure out how to get the old one completly out and the new one in. The bottom part of the sprag is pinched in the flyweel. How does this come out? I took the screws out from the back of the flywheel thinking that would open it up, but it doesn't, it's like it's pressed together or something. Does anyone know how to fix this? Everything I've looked at shows the sprag just coming right out, which is not the case with this bike, it is an 02 ST4S. Any insight would be greatly apreciated. I'm ready to get her back together. Also, the repair manual says that I need to replace the alternator nut. When I ordered the sprag the guys at the Ducati shop told me that they don't replace them. Anyone reuse these nuts succesfully? I'm trying to put a picture up, but it's not working.

You have 3 days left to freely download a workshop manual from the last post on this link - • View topic - 2001 ST4s Workshop Manual if you don't already have one.

Meanwhile, if you put your bike model and year in your sig it will make things a lot easier all around in the long run.

Right on, I've already got the shop manual. It doesn't help a whole lot. I've also got Snyders book, it shows the sprag just coming right out.

Put 4 of the bolts back in but not all the way and spaced out so they are like 3,6,9 and 12 O'Clock positions, and lightly tap them with a hammer!! make sure the flange ring comes out straight!! It was not that tight on mine! I had exactly the same thing happen on mine so check the condition of the flange ring and also the starter gear. If they are both work you can end up distryoing the new sprag! I ended up buying a used flywheel assembly off ebay which only cost me £40 and chaned the whole lot!
