damaged bag question

hi, I'm the new owner of an '04 st4s with a question about saddlebag parts - looks like a new right bag cover ( damaged by previous owner ) would be part number 698.1.021.1bg ( cm website states this has been updated to 246.1.200.1ag ), but is this the entire lid or just the painted part ?
anyone order one recently ? looks like the previous owner already replaced the painted part, and the bike would be really nice with a new lower lid...
thanks, Donn

p.s. anyone like to recommend a small tailbag or tankbag ?

Hi Donn and welcome to the forum.

Ducati changed suppliers for the bags at one point, so that may also explain a change in part numbers. Givi to Nonfango I think, or maybe the other way round.

I can't help with answering whether the part number refers to the painted part or the whole lid though. Do you have the parts PDF ?
If not, download it here - http://www.cda.eu/Products/Microwaves/MC50
Just select year model family and languages from the drop down lists, and then download.
Your question may well be answered within the document...

An excellent choice of motorcycle by the way, well done.

Mark.

Back when I rode BMWs it was nice to be able to replace just the lid of the pannier. Made a 'garage tip-over' a reasonably priced repair. One could even get quick release hinges so it would be easy to install city (thin) or extra large bag doors. Not so with Ducati. A whole new pannier must be bought. Or just the painted lid cover but that rarely gets damaged. I saw a post a month ago that said that these colored pannier panels are now discontinued. The classified section here or ebay is where they are going to show up. Also know which company manufactured your particular pannier set either Fandango or GiVi. They are different in the closing/locking system and the bike mounting bracket is different (the mounting clasp is inverted 180 degrees).

I had some scratches on my bags when I bought my ST3 used and ended up getting a brand new pair of the Givi variety for dirt cheap. And I sold the original set and got a good deal there too. The big bonus was that the pannier set had a key for my topcase so my luggage is now all one key. Hooray.

Within a few months after getting my bags perfect I did drop it here in my driveway and ended up with very minor scratches on the left lid so I have just accepted that luggage gets dinged up. I now live with it as I am not going to spend $450 to get rid of a few scratches.

Hope this answers your question. No you cannot get a pannier door by itself. IMHO do not replace the panniers only to eliminate a few scratches on the lids.

I have a tank bag that I used once. It also came with the bike when I got it and is the large one that attaches to a leather cover that goes on the whole tank. I keep it around for my once a summer one or two week trips. I will unearth it from the garage and pm you with the particulars in I choose to part with it.

Good luck.

Many folks have repaired scratched panniers with sanding and a textured paint. Rustoleum, I believe. There are a few threads here about that and some details that I remember reading in the desmotimes manual.

The finish is quoted to be as good as new. I've been meaning to attempt that for quite a while.

Also, there has been warnings posted about being careful with the painted cover screws. They are different lengths and will go through the cover if installed in the wrong hole.

Have a good one.

So ?
He can just get one of those instead can't he. Much more useful at this time of year anyway.

Only joking.
Well spotted Fred, here's the correct link - Ducati

Welcome Donn. My bike came with a tank bag from LuggageLocker (Tank Locker). It's not huge, but it does have a nice fastener system. A tough plastic collar fits on the gas cap ring and supports the bag off the tank. Not a scratch to be found!

thanks for the welcomes / info / links, that appliance link was a headscratcher, thought I might find some parts for the f650 on there...

I'll keep my eyes peeled for a used pannier...

Blue44 -If you're referring to painting the black finished side of the bag under the color matched cap, I refinished my two black bag sides & they turned out great. Find an auto body paint supply place that sells SEM brand aerosol paints/finishes.

What I did was use a wet sandpaper #600 or higher and lightly wet sanded the scratches on the black sides of my bags. Then I used a light coat of SEM black plastic spray paint to bring back a uniform black color to the plastic. The paint also fills in the scratches a little. Once dry, I then sprayed a couple of light coats of SEM low luster clear #13023. This is a clear that is often used on dashboards and provides just a little bit of shine like the original black plastic. I was really happy with the result.
