Clutch rebuild - parts suggestions
As soon as the snow starts to fly I'll be tearing down my clutch. It's got 27,000 miles on it, and the original owner rode it hard - its time for the rebuild. It's loud, the bike vibrates noticeably in neutral whenever I let it out, and it's getting more snatchy - there's no such thing as a smooth slow start, to get going smoothly takes a fair amount of rev-it-and-go-like-a-bat...
From the service records, it's the original stock clutch - Yoyodyne master cylinder.
Does anybody have any suggestions about components for the rebuild? I'm guessing from the way it feels that it's going to be both plates and basket. Looking mostly for smooth cruising - I'm not a gentle rider but I'm also not riding really hard, no track days - a lot of commuting to work and evening sport rides, some weekend trips and a few longer trips during the summer. If there are choices that'll make a difference in the clutch operation I'd like to hear about it before I start buying parts.

what's the longevity on aluminum baskets like that? just seems like kind of a soft metal to use on such a major drivetrain component

Just get plates with aluminum tabs to cushion the blow. This is actually my first clutch rebuild so I am talking without experience. I also have a hub handy just incase it has heavy wear.
Won't know till I pull it all apart and see. My tool is also on it's way.

I am always curious about folks who replace their clutches at 25-30,000 miles. The OEM clutch on my late 04-ST4s lasted 40,000 miles. I had it replaced with another OEM clutch, figuring it would last the life of the bike. The irony of that thought was brought upon me a year later.

Don't forget the cush drives in there too. The little rubber wedges which are in the centre hub.

Bill, I have changed 3 clutches on 3 different Ducatis (all different owners) and all were hammered to death at 14,000 to 18,000 miles. Not everyone is as skilled as you.

WARNING: POSSIBLE THREADJACK IN PROGRESS
IMPLEMENT THREADJACK CONDITION BRAVO
Just throwing out a data point here...
I am at 58,000 miles on my 2006 ST3S and still on the original clutch. what is the consensus on life expectancy? Am I at the middle or end of clutch life.

Yep, pretty much planning to do the quiet clutch mod. Does anyone know about the eBay seller that has the Ducati Corse baskets? I heard there are some Chinese knockoffs showing up on eBay - might just be one of those rumors floating around, but if I need a basket, I would kinda like to know what I'm buying <g>...
