New ST?

I usually am only on here for the Hyper section, but I recently read an article that said Ducati passed on a new ST for the new Multi. I'm a former ST3 owner, my St3 was taken out from under me by a car. I have ridden both the new Multi, and Diavel for more then a week each. I find them lacking, compared to the ST3.
So my question is are there 5000 ST owners who are willing to put up a $500.00 deposit to show Ducati they have enough customers for a new run? From what I understand the design is there. Ducati has done limited edition bikes and internet sales before. They say 5000 bikes is what they need to do a run.
I'm ready to buy a new 2 up bike, but Ducati doesn't make it. I want a new ST.

Ted

Hahahahahhahaha. Sorry. STs aren't even an afterthought in Ducati's mind. Your best bet would be to engineer a larger tank for a 1098. The rest is supremely easy from there.

Have a good one.

Norton did it, and still hasn't delivered. I have more trust in Ducati, and I believe it's doable.

Another point they are not interested because they don't expect it to sell, but a preorder of 5000 they will do it.

GREAT IDEA ,,, and one worthy of further investigation.

Without wanting to put a dampener on the possabilities ,,,, I can foresee a number of issues ...
Predominantly ,,,,
How to get 5,000 people to agree on the configuration of the required bike.
Will it be a 3 or a 4 valve engine ?
Which engine will it be derived from ?
Equipment level ?
Specification level ,,, Will it or won't it have ,,, Optional ABS, Traction control, DP kits etc etc
Colour range ,,,, Red only ? ,,, or maybe 1 or 2 other liveries ?

PRICE

I can also confirm Ducati interest in offering a more road touring alternative/derivative to the Multistrada.
I got this personally from a senior Ducati executive during discussions on other matters.
Without making any commitment, with raised eyebrows he intimated late 2012 or into 2013.
With it most likely being evolved as a derivative of the Multistrada, with the "bird beak" replaced by a more rounded fuller fairing, lower handlebars, "one piece seat", lower seat height and ground clearance, larger capacity fuel tank, revised hard luggage.
I have previously raised this matter with the same person, and on previous occassions his reply was a flat "Not going to happen" ,,,,, last time was only 2 weeks ago, and I brief his response above.
Still nothing concrete, but more promising than any previous.

You're preaching to the congregation. Yes, we all agree with you. But,.... we are in denial. The ST market is dead. The Multi1200 is a better bike. Yadda and yadda. In the mean time, there are numerous new ST bikes you can check out from various makers including Italian like the Moto Guzzi offering, British like the TR offerings, and of course Japanese. Also, there's one possible American offering on the horizon. No need to get into the , "Well, a small manufacturer like TR has not only 2 so called advetnture bikes as well as sport bikes as well as cruisers, and 2 ST bikes as well, so Ducati's argument that it is too small to 'compete against itself' is total hogwash", because we've been there, and done that. When it comes to being honest as to why Ducati stopped making a true ST, they are full of Bologna. Twas hubris that ruled the engineering day. They can't admit they were wrong, that Ducati can build and offer 2 bikes with side cases as it did before, that the world market will support building 5000 ST units over several years. Just let me design the phucking thing and it will sell like crazy. None of those goofy "Euro" oragami designs from this Italian designer. Basically, a Desmo 16 inspired bike with side cases, a la carte optional abs/suspension and electronic aid features, 2 engine choices, and a top case that doesn't look like a slap on crate, and an all Italian components and construction version so the line up would look like this depending on what you choose to put on your bike: it could be a ST, or a SST, or a SSTr or a SSTr "TI" (tuto Italiano). Oh, and only in red of course.

Now, if you'll excuse, I'll wake up from this dream and face reality, which ain't so bad really. Keep the ST3 till it dies, then retire from motorcycling altogether.

OMG! Hope you you were okay. What a shame to have such a lovely bike treated like that by a cager.
