Hand guards
I just got back from a 3 day trip to southern KY trying to squeeze the last one out before before it's just too freaking cold to ride.
I had a great time as roads were clear and cops were scarce, always a good combo. My hrs per day were reduced to approx 11:00 am to 5:30 pm because of the cold, the mtns got cold quick as the sun went down.
I used my new aerostich electric bib and was pretty happy with it overall;
Aerostich Electric Warmbib - Kanetsu Electrics - Aerostich Suits :: Aerostich/RiderWearHouse Motorcycle Jackets, Suits, Clothing, & Gear
... my hands generally were cold first. Heated grips are being considered, but I'm wondering about handguards to keep the wind off my digits.
I have access to 2 different machine shops and can get things made up for just the price of the materials. I think by removing the bar weights and coming up with a partial "barkbuster" (only attached to the bar end) type alum bracket, then glassing it up to divert the wind.
Is anyone else using handguards ? ... any pics ?
*btw, ... I was told by some locals NOT to ride after dark solo near Hazard ?? ?? banjos ??

I've seen this done but then he does have a comfort fairing, not sure if it would work on the standard fairing though.

Looks like an aftermarket item. There's a brand-name near the bolt on the end-weight (magnify the pic). I can't make it out, though!
BTW, I use "Hot Hands" heated grip covers. Last I checked, less than $70 on ebay. You add them (they're pluggable) when it gets cold. I'm still waiting for REAL cold...

nice pic,
that is very close to what I'm thinking about, as I only see it tied down on the bar end
I'd like to add a slider on the end .....

Cheap snow machine or quad grip covers might work better, remember "Hippo Hands" ?
Not too stylish, but if yer going fast enough, who cares?

the soft canvas/cloth type that just flapped over itself ?
Yup, still got a pair of the red cloth ones at a friends house, I refuse to use them on my ducati, ....
I have used them on studded dirt bikes for the ice .... they do work
"hippo" ? we always called them "elephant ears" or something like that ??

I used ATV handguards on my old bike. The works almost as well as heated grips. The one big bene of heated grips is that they warm the blood in your hands and help keep the rest of your body warm.
Handguard on the ST would have to be a carefully designed/chosen item due to the fairing.
Have a good one.
