Do ECUs, just 'go'?
Hi Guys,
My ST4s is very poorly and wont start.
Turns over but just wont fire up.
Its had a new CAS and new battery but no joy.
This happened quite suddenly.
Do ECUs just fail with little warning?
I've found someone who'll check it but its £70 which I thought was quite a lot just to plug it in.
Suggestions or help most welcome.
Tim

The one on my 900ssie was hit or miss for a few months before it went, cost to test and repair my old one was £210 , a member of the DOCGB sold me one for a good price.

I think he meant "CPS" (crank position sensor), same idea as crank angle sensor on some cars.
2002 ST4S ecus had some reliability issues, although a lot of them failed after running, or would not restart when hot.
You need to make sure the CPS gap is set correcly; this is noted in the service manual. There are shims under the sensor that you can swap around to set the gap. Too wide a gap and it won't detect properly. Too close and it can get ground down.
A thorough check/clean/dielectric grease of all connectors, relays, grounds, etc. is always a good idea periodically.

Tim,the P/O of my 02 ST 4s had 3 ECUs replaced under warranty, this one seems to be doing fine, for the last two years,no problems, although I dont want to be riding to far from home, sort of warey about being stranded in the desert,500 miles from a dealer, there was obviously some problems with theseECUs.How about a "reflash",dont know much about that, but they can be reprogrammed,I guess ,Cheers,Dave

2002 4s ECU
I have an 02 4s as well. I purchased a "brand new" reflashed ECU from Houston Superbikes for $495+ shipping before I identified my problem as fuel.
This has never been on a bike and is the stock map w/o imobilizer.
Been waiting reach "30 posts" before forum will let me post something for sale??
If interested I'll sell it for $350usd.
PM me if you want it.
Thanks
Travers
