Power outlet on later bikes

I've been thinking of putting a power outlet on my '98 - up till now I've been getting accessory power from my Battery Tender pigtail, like I've set up on my other bikes. But I just got a bag of miscellaneous Duc parts that included a power outlet and bracket - the one that mounts on the left rear footpeg mount so the outlet sits just forward of the mount. I don't know anything about modern power outlets - I've never had a modern bike that had them. Is this jack the same that Powerlet sells? What kind of current can it handle (assuming of course that it's wired and fused sufficiently)?

And the most important question - why is it mounted down by the passenger footpeg? I'd think that I'd want a jack up near the instrument console so I could get at it to plug various accessories in. Why so far back and down?

Peter,

The Ducati accessory plug is the same as BMW, John Deere and Powerlet. Wired straight to the battery using 12-14 GA should be fine for 10-15A (fuse it for 15A). The location is great for heated vest/jacket, keeps the cord behind you. Also good for charing battery, just add a Powerlet plug to your charger.

Cheers

Check the fuse on the outlet you recently acquired. The outlets for MY 02 and earlier ST models had a wimpy 3 amp fuse, not enough for electric riding gear. Powerlets sells upgraded ones.

I've got the typical battery tender dongle hanging out of the back of the fairing way low down. There's no fuse on the power outlet - just the outlet bolted to the bracket. I understand that loc for heated gear OK - but I was thinking more about accessories. What do you modern guys do for "cigarette lighter" things like helmet chargers, iPhone chargers and the like? I'm trying to get an idea of what works well and not so well on a bike before I start wiring anything. On our older bikes, I made adapters to run everything off our battery tender dongles and it's worked very well on camping trips and long rides.

Check the Powerlets site for the many available plugs and outlets.
