First 2k miles done, doing an oil change and have a question.
Okay I am just about at my first 2k miles on the 1999 ST4 I picked up a couple of months ago. Dodging the nasty rain we have had here for months got old. If I have time tonight I will do my first oil change on this bike, not my first oil change ever.
Couple of easy questions:
Do you change the crush washers on the both the plug and the screen each time?
Obviously I will remove the fairing to be able to get at the screen and pull it all the way out. There are two bolts, the head on the main one is horizontal and obviously faces out so you can access it and pull the screen all the way out. There is a small one which faces down towards the ground and I assume it’s a tension bolt to lock the horizontal bolt in place. The question is, do you always clean this screen each time you change the oil and is my assumption on the bottom bolt correct in that I would need to remove it in order to remove that screen.
Thanks as always.

No reason to remove the bottom bolt, I would check the screen as the bike is new to you. I check mine every other time I do an oil change. Just reuse the crush washers, maybe get a new one once in a while.
Also there is no reason to remove the fairings for this. I remove the mid fairing screw that holds the faring to the bike right above the clutch, you can manage by just pulling it out slightly to get at everything you need to, unless you just enjoy unnecessary pain.

Cool, thanks for the advice. I was basically going to skip the screen if I had to pull the fairing.
So what does that bottom bolt hold?

That bolt is a "cork". It's used to facilitate machining the oil port (galley) that's on the opposite side of the large hole. You can see this hole if you use a flashlight, look into the screen's bolt threaded area, and look up (your head should be on the floor at this point!) Best not to disturb that bolt. It's just a bolt with a crush washer.
Reagarding the fairing...you should remove 2 of the belley bolts that hold the right lower to the left lower, in addition to the large bolt near the clutch. Roll of ductape will help keep the fairing flexed outward...

@220, what did you find out about the oil consumption issue you had a while ago? Any conclusions?

Since questions are being asked about the screen, I'll be so bold as to ask one of my own. . . What size is the allen key for the screen on my '02 ST4s?
Thanks.
