Dead Duc - Barely Runs
Just got my ducati back from the dealership after a new crank position sensor was installed, and I have put about 40 miles on it and the bike is giving me problems again. When the CPS went bad, it would not rev up above 2000 RPM's and it went into the shop and was diagnosed and fixed. Now, the bike was great for 40 miles and then it suddenly started back firing, sputtering, acting like it was missing, and bogging down when I roll the throttle on fast. Under 3000 rpm it seems ok but once it comes up in rpm's it starts popping and missing.
I can't take it back to the dealership it was fixed at because it's 2 hours away and I don't have the spare cash for a big tow bill. I'm thinking of taking it to the local ducati dealer near me and getting a diagnostic. My question is: What can a diagnostic tell me? can it diagnose a faulty -new- CPS sensor, or TPS sensor, a bad fuel pump, out of time, bad injector, etc?
Do you guys have any recommendations for things to check? The battery is not in the best of shape and is older, but it still starts it up fine and doesn't sound weak while cranking over. I check all of the wire connections and it seems fine. I put new battery cables on it as well.
Thanks for the help!

Reason: Forgot to mention that this is a 1998 ST2 with 13000 miles. I just bought it and have had nothing but problems!

Since you mentioned it is a 1998 ST2, check your voltages while running. The 98 is notoriously problematic when it comes to charging systems. When you're sure that is healthy, then we can start digging into other systems looking for problems.

Sounds like a split fuel line in the tank and or a clogged fuel filter.

It could be they may have used the wrong spacer(s) or no spacer. Take a look at the cps. You'll need to remove the left side mid panel to see if there's any spacer(s) between the cps and the engine case. On my ST3, the spacer is a bronzy colour and has a tab at the bottom. AFAIK, and IIRC, the CPS is a hall effect proximity sensor. If the spacer gap is not set right, the sensor cannot work properly when the engine heats up due to expansion/gap widening. If there is no spacer or 2 spacers, then you may need to add or remove one after consulting with other ST2 owners about the spacers on their bikes. If the correct number of spacers are in place, then follow the lead off the cps to the right side and see if you can reach the connector there to unplug it and replug it a few times. You most likely will have to remove the right side mid panel to reach it, which if you haven't done it yet will be an indoctrination into the world of ST home maintenance. Good luck.

If no spacer was used most likely the sensor is damaged as it will have the end ground off by the gear. I'd pull it to have a look.
