Exhaust Modifications....stock!

i've ran across plenty of pages detailing how to modify the mufflers on monsters and other Ducatis but when i pulled my pipe apart on my ST it was different so i jsut put it back together. then had an idea on how to get the exhaust to exit the 2nd chamber without having to cut the entire exhaust apart to remove the tube from chamber 2-3.....did it all without ever taking the exhaust off the bike. maybe there is someone that has done this, or had the idea but I never ran across it in my searches. so here it is.

on the back of the pipe between the center actuall exhaust exit and the outside endcap circle I used a punch to mark my spot then drilled the holes. I think it took me about 20 minutes to do both pipes. I started with 4 holes in each and still wanted it louder so drilled more testing the sound along the way. i'm no ducati fuel injection expert either but i decided to up the fuel trim a little inside the computer to compensate for any leaning plus I read they are lean from the factory anyway. might jsut be me but it did get rid of a slight poping I had on decel. I have noticed no weird flat spots or anything with how the bike runs after doing this and have abotu 500 miles on it. man it sounds great and no one even notices....if they do it almost looks like the exhaust was made this way.

ok now here are the pictures. ON MY WEBSHOTS PAGE!!

thoughts, opinions, flames?

Nice work! I still want some carbon pipes for mine though. For the look AND the sound. Friends still say the ST4s sounds really good with the stockers riding behind me but that still doesn't suffice. May try your method 'til then.

I would listen DonnyO, I have stock cans on 04 ST3. As much as I'd like more sound by doing it on the cheap like you did, I'd still be leary of messing up a good thing; it's run great for 38k now.

I'll leave it up to you if you care to take the time to do so.

Thanks for the offer. jim

I will take some vids when i get time. I figured if it was that bad stock cans can be found on ebay fairly cheap.....lots cheaper than anything aftermarket....and i'm cheap and broke!! I did hear another guys who did soemthign similar so I had an idea of what it would sound like. with only 4 holes in each it sounded like an exhaust leak so I had to put more in. I could make the holes bigger if needed as well but i'm happy for now. didnt' wnat to wake the whole town with it but wanted some sound.

At another forum I read a story about drilling out the rivets at the back plate of the muffler, take the inner assembly of pipes out and cut 2/3rds off before remounting the plate again and riveting it back in place.
Haven't tried it myself though so not sure whether this is true.

i modded my pipes. It was easy. just take the rivets out and remove the caps then cut from the inside smallest tube to where the larger ring on the cap is, you can turn the cap around and trace it with a sharpie, just cut the donut piece out. you can drill holes all around the tracing then cut between the holes to make it easier. I had to cut my airbox open and get a dp chip to get it to run best. Heres what i did, dont mind the earlier pages just start here.

dont cut the center pipe at all just that ring in the pics. When i finished i threw a bit of black engine paint in there to hide the cuts. BTW, it sounds great and not too too loud.
