DIY oil change question ST3s
I searched around ducati.ms and didn't find an answer to this question. I have 3100 miles on my 06 ST3s so I jumped in to do my own oil change. I have the shop manual (CD) and followed instructions and everything went well except...
It says every 2 oil changes take out the gauze filter located just below the sight glass and clean. It says to unscrew the filter to remove. I think I felt the inside edges of a hex head but I'm not sure. Anyway, I didn't get it out so I bypassed this service.
My question is what do you use and how do you get this gauze out?
Also, is this the right place to ask questions like this?
Thanks
Rick

You use the same 14mm hex key that you used to remove the outer cover, to unscrew the inner screen. At least you noticed it has a hex head! A lot of people look in there after taking off the outer cover and don't even notice that there's anything in there!

Why didn't I think of trying that?
Well, thanks, now I know for next time.

This is what it looks like if you are curious. I did the same thing as you, I couldn't figure out how to get to it my first time.

Wow, I had no idea. Had I pulled that out I definitely would have thought something was wrong. I was expecting a small gauze mesh about the size of a large thimble.

Just be sure to really seat the hex head in there. It was amazingly tight on mine the first time I did it, but it did come out.

Does the manual say when to replace that screen (as opposed to just cleaning it)? I purchased the screen not sure if it was to be replaced or cleaned, $53. I'm only at 12000 miles so if it is to be replaced at say 18000 or 24000 maybe I'll just hold on to it. If not go get myself some money back.
Thanks, Kevin.

Hi Kevin, you shouldn't have to replace it, ever, unless it gets damaged..I haven't done the st3 yet but my 916 also had this filter..I just sprayed it clean with some brake parts cleaner and reinstalled..
I would definitely try to get your money back.

I was told (by my previous dealer) that the gauze filter is only there to prevent the larger particles clogging or going to the actual (paper) filter down under the engine. The larger particles you can think of are for instance flakes coming of the rockers as with the older engines.
The flaking issue has been resolved (by the sound of the comments all of us make at this forum) so I wouldn't worry too much about it.
As said above - you don't need to replace it unless it's damaged. Just clean it and that's it.
I personally haven't had any reason to replace it (sofar).
Ciao
