Trip computer quirk/gremlin

Howdy All,

'04 ST4S ABS. trip computer problem.

With key "on" instrument display goes through all self tests fine. All displays are normal. When I press the "B" button to scroll from total mileage to trip mileage and so forth it works for one or two clicks then the OBD light comes on and the display goes back to total mileage.

Turning off and back on resets the light but it will do it again.

"B" button works to set clock just fine

I tried recalling the codes by holding "A" button down then turning the key on but since the OBD light resets it does not show any codes.

I have tried disconnecting the battery and letting it sit, no luck.

Also removed and added some dialectric grease to the main harness plug at the back of the instrument display and no luck there either.

Appreciate any ideas/solutions

Oh, could use a good source for good quality fairing well nuts

Cheers

Chris

For the well nuts, go to Ace Hardware or Lowe's.

Possible dash failure. Take it to the dealer and see if they can read the error codes from the ECU with the VDST tool. It may give a clue or the dash may just need to be replaced.

Did you ever have fogging or water entry into the dash?

If you need a new one, here you go:

http://cgi.ebay.com/STRUMENTAZIONE-I...item3a63d30203

You will have zero miles on a new dash, so keep track of the old mileage for purposes of service intervals.

Go figure True Value for well nuts!

Thanks for the link SF84 I guess it is time to brush up on my Italian!

I wonder if the dealer can program the odometer to reflect the current mileage? Probably not given the possibility of mischief.

Would using the "magic red" key do anything? Or is that simply for the immobilizer?

hmmm wonder if anyone makes titanium well nuts.........

Cheers

Chris

The dealer can not, by law, reprogram it. There are devices to do this, they are all illegal. Some dealers do offer this "service" however, but not any for motorcycles that I'm aware of.

Yes, the red key will be necessary to inaugurate the dash and ECU to work together.
