Cambelt change parts??
Hi all, I am doing a few jobs on my 2002 ST4S. I also want to change the cambelts and was wondering what other parts need to be replaced during this process?

Nowt John , just the belts.
I had to replace a tensioner pulley one time, but you wont know about that until you've got the covers and belts off.

Thanks for that Mark, I was not 100% sure! I did read somewhere that the tentioner nuts needed to be replaced everytime the belts were? Not sure if they are threadlock bolts?

No worries John, I didn't buy any new nuts and bolts, and I dont remember threadlock being used either - but it was a while back and my memory is not improving with age. I'll have to gen up on it again before I do them in the springtime.
If threadlock is a part of the deal, then I will have used it. I cant remember using it, so it probably isn't a part of the deal.
If you want a copy of the workshop manual, pm me your addy on the other site and I'll burn you a copy and post it to you.
My kids grandparents live in Beaumaris btw.

Thanks Mark, I do have a PDF file of the workshop manual I guess its probably the same one you have. I dont know if it was on here or another Ducati site I use, but they mentioned that the pully locking nuts should be replaced but there is no mention of it in the manual? I am changing the starter gear and the flange as mine are worn out, I changed the sprag a few months back but its starting to play up again so I thought I would change them before it ended up distroying the new sprag!!
Oh and I am the opposite end of the island!

Yes it will be the same manual.
The job was done as per the manual, so that will be the reason for me not getting new nuts - although they are probably not very expensive.
I've never had any starter or sprag issues on either of my ST's.

Yes I'm aware of where Hollyhead is, I got a late train for Bangor many years ago, fell asleep, and woke up alone on the empty train at the dockside at around 7am.

It is recommended to change the pulley nuts , and I have done so when changing the belts myself but some say its unnecessary (including some Ducati mechanics) They are special nuts which lose their effectiveness when re-used , or so it is said !
Either way they are cheap so perhaps worth the reassurance ?

That's what I heard aswell, is it a nylock nut then? Also what is the part number so I can order them?

You can buy new nuts, which is a safe way to go.
I'm pulling winter maintenance presently myself on the ST4S. Yet having done this for all of my Ducati's 888-748-996's I use red locktite on used nuts and have never had a issue with them loosening up....And will do it again this week......I clean them in acetone until nice and clean along with the studs, and a drop or two of red locktite...
Most likely you will have to order them from the dealer, as they are a metal nylock-nut...

The nylon in a nyloc nut would get soft in the heat and reduce its locking effectiveness. I'd thought about tapping the metal clips back down on the Fujis, but for $7/ pr, it just doesn't seem worth it given the consequences.
That said, heat and thread lock aren't good friends either. I do wish there was a reuseable alternative. I like the aero-grade self locking nuts, but I worry that they would damage the threads on the the stud over time.
