geez, what is this. The MS is great for what it is designed to do, but it is not an ST replacement. I have ridden one and it is nice to a point, but not as nice as the ST on long juants. It is also quite noisy. However, folks who ride MS's can also be called stuff like old farts or whatever, since they are not riding the pur sang Sports models....right?
Multi is in a class by itself.

Just about.
Do some of you really consider a PCV, AT, fork fluid, and tires, as constituting the bike being race prepped?
Laughable if so!

You left out the revalved and lowered suspension, GMD Computrack chassis set-up, lighweight wheels, general racebike strip and prep, etc...it's fun to watch people gloss over the bits they don't want to see.
I have no dog in this fight and fully believe a race prepped Multi with a Professional Rider aboard can run with the Open Expert Supersort class at a club level event. It was every bit as race prepped as the Supersport bikes it was running against.

+1 But, you have to understand that you are talking to the multi-crowd. Spec sheet racing is all they know. When you have four bikes in one (one of them being a real-deal SBK and another a mountain goat), then there is no way to win. You just have to bow done to those who paid the most.
Have a good one.

So, you consider the following as "nits"?
"...Paul Thede at Race Tech blueprinted the stock fork and shock, ...Ducati Performance forged-aluminum wheels and Bridgestone BT003 race rubber replaced the standard rolling stock..."
"..blueprinted..." who the heck blueprints his suspension? Who the heck puts race rubber on a dual sport? Those ain't no nits.
Here's a pic of an ST on a paved track. Though I don't know for sure, it's unlikely he had his suspension blueprinted, or that he's running race tires. Looks like a stock bike to me.

Yeah, race rubber does not come with a sipe down the centerline.
Good one.
Gawd, I need a proof-reader!

This is my isue with the Multi. It isn't really a mountain goat because if the size of the front wheel. So if they didn't try to pretend it was an enduro bike they could have made something lower that would have been more road oriented.
Its not that I don't like those adventure bikes but they are a specialised thing. I prefer to keep the two separate because each places limits on the other.

Rossco,
I very much agree (and was being facetious). =)
You are right, the 1200 would have been much more appealing with typical suspension travel. Less travel obviosly worked for Pike's Peak. I'd love to see pics of a true owner (not someone with a free bike) catching air.
BTW, there are certainly compromises made for our STs, but they are probably the truest SPORTStourer that comes to mind. The VFR would be the closest runner up with Ape Futura and Sprint ST tied for third. For ST duties, the Multi 1200 is somewhere South of there (or North in your case ), IMVHO.
Have a good one.

Why take it off if it dosen't interfere with your foot position?
