Weight reduction in 2005

In 2005 the dry weight specs go down 24 lbs for all the ST models. In an earlier thread someone wisecracked that they just changed the way they rated them - does anyone know if this is a real reduction or not? If it is, what did they change that dropped the 24 lbs?

The changeover happened in 2004 with the redesign.

The lower weight is thanks to:

• CAN-line electronics which reduced the number of discrete wires to each device in the wiring harness
• Multifunction instrument cluster that weighs almost nothing compared to the mechanical gauges
• Removal of the mechanical speedometer drive
• Headlight assembly made from polycarbonate instead of glass
• Fewer support brackets to hold the nose assembly
• Integration of the external immobilizer into the dash unit
• Lighter upper triple assembly
• And I think the seat may be a tad lighter too

Merry Christmas

Some is real, most is not.

Before, weight was with fluids and battery, but no fuel.

After, no fluids or battery (and no fuel).

Check the owners manual, it clearly states this.

Tom

P.S. Fluids and battery weigh about 9kg (20lbs).

Weight reduction in 2005 [?]

Thanks for the replies. I'm still a bit confused by them - the specs I looked up show no weight changes in 2004 - they show lighter weights in 2005. So that doesn't sound like the 2004 remodel is what's being shown. Since they were 24# changes for all the models I was also wondering if there was some truth in thread I saw, that claimed it was all in the measuring methodology. I looked up the measurements below on several sites, and they all said they were measuring dry weight.

I put this out on the forum because I'm looking for an ST this coming year. I'm pretty small and light, so I'd consider hunting for a newer model if it was 24# lighter, but I wouldn't bother for a few # difference - and that'd make the hunt easier, more years to choose from.

Here are the specs I looked up:

(dry) ST3 ST3S ST4 ST4S ST4S/ABS
2003 215/474 212/467 217/478
2004 214/472 212/467 217/478
2005 203/448 201/443 206/454
2006 203/448 204/449
2007 201/443 204/449

2007 201/443 204/449
The 2004 and 2005 bikes are identical except for the wet-clutch on the 2005. The redesign is what dropped the weight. I've had both a 2002 and 2004 ST4s, so I can speak from experience.

I'm embarking on a 50lb weight reduction program on my ST this spring. I'm curious if I can get under 400lb without the bags and with fluids.

Which brings up another question I have never checked into. I have always assumed that the dry weight quoted was without bags/brackets. Does anyone know?

I'll never understand this, weight should be with full up fluids and battery, when do you ride without them???

Without fuel and bags (but with the brackets), mine is down to 440 lbs after dropping 45lbs weight. Not cheap, and even less cheap to remove more weight.
