Ducati 748, to part with it or not...
As some of you may have read I am faced with a dilema from my insurance company. Following an accident I had on my 1998 748 I submitted a claim to insurance for the damage.
Quote for the damage is $13,871. Damaged pieces include the following:
All fairings including tail
windshield
turn signals
fairing supports on front
headlight
air tubes
levers
shifter
slip-on exhaust
rear subframe
My options are to wave goodbye to the bike and I get roughly $1600 in pocket after insurance pays the bike off. The cost of keeping the bike is only $850, so I can have the bike and roughly $750 as it sits. I have time to fix it, but I don't have any money besides what insurance will give me. If I kept the bike and parted it out, I am positive that it is worth more than $850 since it has a good frame, forks, tripples, engine, rear swingarm, wheels, tank, and many small pieces. I could easily pass by the $1600 mark if I kept it and parted it out.
Let me know what you would do in my situation. Thanks for your input, I will likely use this with a weighing factor to come up with a decision.

+1 $1600.00 would be a good downpayment on an 848! I only put $1000.00 down on my 748 in 2001.

I was in a similar situation 6 years ago with my 916, although due to the age of the bike (at the time) the value was higher.
I got mine fixed for a lot less than the quoted price and definitely for less than the cost to replace/upgrade.
I still have mine today and it is still a great bike, I recently had a test ride on a Hypermotard and the dealer really wanted my bike as a trade-in as much as he wanted to sell me a new bike.
If the bike is basically sound I would keep it and rebuild it if I could find the parts at the right price failing that part it out - you should get significantly more than the $1600 and $1600 won't go very far towards a new bike.
If it was offered to me for $850 I'd buy it........

Buy it back for $850 and replace all the bodywork with aftermarket stuff for less than $1000. The headlight will be around $250-$350 on eBay, the front brackets will be fairly cheap off of eBay, and a biposto subframe will probably be around $100 (or less). If you shop around and wait for good deals, you can probably get it back on the road for under $1500.
If you aren't mechanically inclined, or don't feel like messing with it, you can either take the money and run....or buy it back and try to sell the bike for $1000+ and make a little more money by selling it someone who wants a project or a future track bike....or build a trackbike out of it and sell it.....lots of potential possibilities, but only you will know whether you feel like messing with a wrecked bike.

Thanks for all of the responses and the poll results, folks. I have ruled out taking the $1600 and running, as this doesn't seem like enough to me being that I am mechanically inclined and all.
At this point I am interested in keeping the bike and parting it out, or selling it outright. Bubba, I will reply to your PM shortly. If Bubba does not buy it, I will be parting it out on ebay. All part besides those listed in the OP will be available. Watch for info in the Classifieds.
